Realistic Balance Mayoral Candidate Kilian to Donate Campaign War chest

Below is a letter received from Realistic Balance mayoral candidate John Kilian. Kilian lost to incumbent Mayor Dan Drew (D), but received 16% of the total votes cast for mayor; a precedent for a third party challenger in Middletown. Mayor Drew raised $93,000 in contributions for re-election campaign. Kilian says he  will be donating 100% of his raised funds as he spent no money for his bid for mayor.
-------------------------------------------------

Since the campaign ended, people have been lining up to solicit me for my candidate committee surplus. After due diligence  I am going to direct my treasurer to disburse the entire kit and caboodle left in the Citizens for Kilian account to The Buttonwood Tree Performing Arts and Cultural Center.  They are a local institution that plays an important role in our community, and they are in need of financial support from the community.

As far as what will become of the bond I posted when I sued the City, that will become available before Thanksgiving, and has been reserved for what will likely be a very large bar bill in Newtown the day after.

Sincerely,

John Kilian

Candidate Bio: Fred Carroll for Common Council (Realistic Balance)

Fred Carrol for Common Council, Realistic Balance Party

Hello Middletown Readers, I'm Fred Carroll and I'm running for a seat on the Middletown's Common Council on the Realistic Balance Party line; proceeding is a brief profile.
I was born in Queens, New York in 1953 within a one mile radius of two libraries, and a park which was chock full of chess tables and hand ball courts.

I would say that my political philosophy can be summed up by the line spoken by Cool Hand Luke,"Sometimes nothing is a pretty good hand." I have a gutter eye view of life in Middletown and"quality of life" issues would be my primary focus. I would presume to offer my own experience a la "Bums With Brooms" as a template for dealing with the ever growing problem of the irascible street life in Middletown.
"Give an (indigent)  man a broom and what he does or doesn't do with it, will tell you all you need to know about what to do with him."

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Fred Carroll

Judge Rules in Third Party Ballot Case

Middlesex Superior Court Judge Julie Aurigemma has ruled that  the City of Middletown is to put Realistic Balance candidates, who had been removed from the ballot, back on. Candidates Fred Carrol & John Kilian were not removed, however all cross endorsed candidates were because of lack of signature. Stephen Smith, running solely on Realistic Balance, is also returned to the ballot. Judges across Connecticut had ruled similarilily, for example  in case of Westport & East Haven third party candidates.

Middletown has already mailed some absentee ballots without those candidates included, but ballots going to the polls for election day had been withheld from printing until the ruling.

Here is the judge's decision:

Candidate Bio: John Kilian for Mayor Realistic Balance Party of Middletown

Middletown Insider blog is accepting bios from all  municipal candidates.
See criteria: http://www.middletowninsider.com/2013/08/request-for-candidate-bios-for-all.html
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Candidate Bio: Mayoral Candidate John Kilian
Realistic Balance Party of Middletown
Education: University of Notre Dame, United States Army Intelligence Center and School Advanced Individualized Training, CCSU BS Computer Science, CCSU BSED, United States Army Medic Advanced Individualized Training, Goodwin College AD Nursing, Army Medical Department Medical Information Officer training, U.S. Army Medical Captian's Career Course

Work:  Hartford Hospital Senior Distributed Systems Engineer, Army National Guard Nurse, USA Hockey Referee

Why do you want to hold public office in Middletown? I believe I can help our city to be a better place if my talents and energies are applied to shaping our future.

What experience do you bring to the table? My military and medical experience provide me with a perspective that could help guide our community to be more cohesive and healthy. Selfless service is a key ethical cornerstone of my approach to team building.

What do you think the town's most pressing issue is? The culture of immediate gratification threatens to erode the ground work that needs to be set for the next generation to thrive.

What do you love most about Middletown?
It is a beautiful place with an awesome downtown. The river is on of my favorite places, too. I'd be more open to mud volleyball if they cranked down the music a few decibels. Who needs the hearing loss?

What do you like to do for fun?
I like to tango, boating, and going for hikes in blizzard conditions in the Colorado back country.

How can residents keep up with you?  Cut down on the junk food and work out a few times a week.

Update: A open letter to Mayor Drew sent by John Kilian "Uniform Drug Use"
October 18, 2013
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mayor,
I want to thank you for providing an open door to me to discuss matters I know we both consider vital to our community. Whatever frustration I may be experiencing with the City with respect to ballot access is balanced by the political equity you have shown to me and my party. You clearly are determined to fight for every vote in the City by tirelessly demonstrating consideration for everyone, to the extent that I feel grateful that my daughter is too young to vote. That cupcake scene is right up her alley.

I have a fairly clear view of drug use by people in uniform, in general. The power of narcotics compromises the will power of even the most disciplined people. Drug use is a common occurrence in the military, especially among servicemembers returning from Afghanistan. When servicemembers are found to be using, it makes for a quick end to their career. However, the Army does provide its soldiers the opportunity to apply for rehab in an effort to remedy their addiction. Similar interventions for civil servants who would otherwise be kicked to the curb are in everyone's best interest.

Sincerely,

John Kilian, RN

Guestblog: Fred Carroll: Stand my Ground on the Ballot

All opinions of guest bloggers are the sole responsibility of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Insider staff. Fred Carroll has been a guest blogger in the past and is a candidate for Common Council for the Realistic Balance Party line.
--------------------------------------------------------------

In his own words:  First, let me cut to the chase and state that I have decided to, in John Kilian's words, "stand  my ground on the ballot" and continue to run for a seat on the Common Council. My motivation for deciding to stay on the ballot is the same as moved me to consider vacating in the first place, which is to say the sorry state of Third Party Politics around here.

Even as I was disillusioned to the point of resignation by the official shenanigans of the dominant political machine in Middletown, I now feel a renewed dedication to do whatever it takes to fight the good fight for a free and fair election.

In other words, cross every "t," and dot ever "i," and jump through every hoop and bend over forward or backward as indicated by ever changing law or arbitrary whim.

When legitimate candidates like Wesleyan Professor Steven Devoto or Army Nurse John Kilian have to spend so much effort just to be on the ballot, then it is definitely time for anyone and everyone who can, to lean their shoulder into the task of giving outsiders a fair shot local politics.

So even as I continue to clean the streets of Middletown, unconcerned with getting paid, so I will continue to pursue elective  office in Middletown unconcerned with the probability of it "paying off".

  Sincerely, Fred Carroll

Letter to the Editor: Killian Apologies to Town Clerk, Carroll Leaves Ballot

Letters to the editors are printed as a courtesy to readers, and do not necessarily express opinions by the Insider volunteer staff. John Killian is the Realistic Balance Party founder and Mayoral candidate. As with all letter's to the editor, legitimacy of all claims made are solely responsibility of the author of the letter;not the editorial staff of the Insider.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, I want to reiterate that I have great confidence in Linda Bettencourt's personal integrity, and appreciate her contributions as the official of this year's election in Middletown.
I want to address proactively any criticism that is bound to arise from Chairman Fred Carroll's intended departure from this year's ballot. While this may frustrate the City's wish to print ballots as soon as possible, with good intentions to facilitate the fulfillment of absentee ballot applications, any printing of ballots prior to a settlement of Kilian v. Bettencourt is presumptive of an outcome in the City's favor, despite recent legal precedent to the contrary.

I have spoken to both Linda and SOS Attorney Ted Bromley about the process that would follow a vacancy created by Fred's withdrawal. Linda confirmed to me that Middletown Counsel supports the right of Realistic Balance Party to replace this vacancy. These conversations have convinced me that our differences due not stem from any malice on their part.

However, this time we will be asking for the parameters for compliance with the law as they see it to be confirmed in writing and in advance.

Sincerely,

John Kilian
Secretary, Realistic Balance Party of Middletown.

Letter to the Editor: Realistic Balance Party Files Suit Against Town Clerk Middletown

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This morning, via phone call, I requested the Town Clerk of the City of Middletown to provide a copy of the Working Family Party's endorsement letter of their candidates for election in 2013 in the City of Middletown. I was told that before such documents were revealed that she would first have to consult with the City Attorney.

My wife appeared in the Clerk's office and, after also being denied a request for this and other documents in person, filed a written request.

This afternoon I received access to these documents.
Among them is a hardcopy of a simple text email conferring the Working Families Party endorsement, without any signatures.
This seems at odds with a strict reading of the statute that the Town Clerk claims left her no option but to remove several people from the Realistic Balance Party line of this year's ballot.  It certainly deserves to be brought to the attention of the Middletown public.
Attached is a scanned version of the email hardcopy provided to me this afternoon.
Sincerely,
John Kilian

Letter to the Editor: Opposing Mayoral Candidates Exchange Emails

Letters to the editors are printed as a courtesy to readers, and do not necessarily express opinions by the Insider volunteer staff. John Killian is the Realistic Balance Party founder and Mayoral candidate. As with all letter's to the editor, legitimacy of all claims made are solely responsibility of the author of the letter;not the editorial staff of the Insider. Below is an email string sent to our email from Realistic Balance Mayoral candidate John Killian illustrating and exchange between himself and incumbent for re-election Mayor Dan Drew, ( no preface was included by Killian).
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dan,
Thank you for this gracious invitation. Although I may miss the fine print on some matters, the part of this email that allows me to attend this event for free has great appeal to someone who may be breaking his bank to pay for the $350 fee to have someone carry a summons across Court Street.

I have always been a great fan of the Kennedy family, and must confess that it is a positive coup for Middletown to have such an esteemed guest in our City. Aspiring to the ideals of truly heroic public servants will help us all make Middletown a better place for all of our citizens.

Thank you again for your generous invitation, and I look forward to seeing you on Main Street.
Sincerely,

    John Kilian

Letter to the Editor: Carlos Tango, John Killian & Realistic Balance Petition to Court Update

Letters to the Editors are published as a courtesy to readers and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Insider staff. Below is a letter to the Editor from Realistic Balance Candidate for Mayor John Killian. Recently,  the Attorney General of the State of CT  ruled that any third party candidates be eliminated from the ballot had they not submitted signatures to the local Town Clerks offices by reason of state statute adopted in 2011 mandating  individual signatures from all those endorsed by a third party. Killian and Fred Carrol, running for Common Council on the Realistic Balance line petitioned the court to reinstate the names on the ballot.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Killian
This is a matter for consideration inside and outside the courtroom.

This is where I see this going:

IN THE Middlesex Superior COURT OF THE STATE OF Connecticut

PETITION FOR A WRIT OF MANDAMUS

To the Honorable Judges of the Middlesex Superior Court:
Your Petitioner, Fred Carroll, states as follows:
1. The Town Clerk of Middletown has removed from Middletown's 2013 municipal ballot candidates nominated by the Realistic Balance Party against the will of several nominees.
2. The Town Clerk sites a statute brought to the Town Clerk's attention that requires all nominees to sign the document communicating the party's nomination before a deadline that has now passed.
3. The interpretation of the Town Clerk of the City of Middletown does not match the precedent for nominations in the 2011 municipal election, when similar nominations were put in force without candidates being required to sign the form communicating their nominations.
4. No form is published that would guide a candidate to comply with the statute being cited.
5. The Town Clerk was unaware of the statuatory requirement before the deadline, but is preventing compliance with the statute after said deadline has passed. Every indication that all requirements to appear on the ballot were communicated to the Realistic Balance Party prior to the passing of the deadline.
6. No ballots have yet been printed by the City for this election.
7. Any candidates not wishing to appear on the ballot are not restricted from removing their names, but candidates who do wish to appear are being removed.
8. When the City of Bridgeport ran out of ballots in the 2010 state election, it abridged the time limit mandated by a well known statute requiring the polls to close at 8 PM. Erring on the side of enabling voter participation is a well established precedent in our state and nation.
9. Similar relief for candidates, who are perfectly willing to sign any document communicating their wish to be on the ballot, is a reasonable remedy for these honest mistakes on the part of all parties.
10. The rights of the Realistic Balance Party to participate in this year's election will be dramatically undermined due to the evisceration of its ballot presence.

WHEREFORE, Petitioner requests that a Writ of Mandamus issue out of this Court directed to the Town Clerk of the City of Middletown, commanding the Town Clerk to reinstate all candidates nominated by the Realistic Balance Party at its August 27, 2013 caucus who state in writing with their signature their desire to be on the ballot

Respectfully submitted,
 TBD

The Power of Bauer: Candidate Declines Endorsement, Clarifies Position on Former Councilmens' Performance

Former Councilman David Bauer seeks re-election
In an article published yesterday in the Hartford Courant three term Councilman seeking re-election this November, David Bauer elaborated on his decision to decline the endorsement from the Realistic Party of Middletown. Bauer was nominated to the Middletown Republican slate as a Council candidate, and in the Courant article,  he discusses his wishes to focus on being part of the GOP slate.

The Courant quotes Bauer as follows: "I am pleased and confident that the Republican slate has such a commitment, and they are the team I wish to associate with."
Republican Town committee executive board members  party Chairman Ken McClellan and vice Chair William Wilson, have said in various public forums that they, and the nominating committee for 2013 GOP candidates, no longer agreed with views held by Pessina and Bibisi.
Bauer gave a letter to decline the Realistic Balance nomination to the Town Clerk earlier this week to have his name removed from the RB line on the ballot, the letter reads:
"I was pleased to run on the Realistic Balance Party ticket in 2011 when there was a bipartisan selection of candidates. Sadly, the character of this year's Realistic Balance candidates is dominated by the inclusion of candidates Joseph Bibisi and Philip Pessina.
I was part of the Middletown Republican Town Committee selection process that rejected both Phil and Joe's application to the GOP slate. My personal reason to reject their applications was my disappointment in their performance in the current term of the Common Council.
Philip Pessina and Joseph Bibisi hold the minority leadership positions, so they must take responsibility that the council minority did not advance a single resolution to the council agenda in the entire term, and rarely, if ever, even met in caucus. They let the council majority do all the work of the council, and simply postured their opinions on the majority's legislative resolutions.
An entire third of the council was rendered ineffective, and I consider that unacceptable. The council minority did show up at meetings, but they showed up empty-handed.
If our local government is to work its best, all our elected officials have to work. I am pleased and confident that the Republican slate has made such a commitment, and they are the team I wish to associate with, and they are the team I hope the Middletown Voters will support on November 5th.
We will reward your trust with hard work and innovative legislation to improve Middletown's services and financial stability in a sustainable manner, insuring that the 'checks and balances' that make our democracy so great, are consistently there the entire term."
An article in the Middletown Patch also elaborates on Bauer's position to run solely as part of the GOP team.

It has recently come to my attention that the eBook version of my book was inadvertently retired.
It has now been reinstated: http://www.lulu.com/shop/john-kilian/downtown-drive-thru/ebook/product-20981727.html

Since its publication, Downtown Drive-Thru has accurately predicted the future of Middletown's political rebellion against the forces of western hegemony, including last night's upset victory in the Democratic primary by petitioning candidate DeVoto for PnZ.

If you are in the least interested in what the future holds for the City of Middletown, I do not read palms, but I do write books.

For those of you scoring at home, after last night's victory by DeVoto, it is opponents of a Downtown Drive-Thru: 1, people who don't want to talk about it: -1.

Today, an Air Quality Alert has been issued ( http://middletown-ct.patch.com/groups/breast-cancer-awareness/p/air-quality-alert-action-day-issued-for-thursday-576ab227 )

Recommended actions include reducing unnecessary vehicular traffic. Under such conditions, this suggests that Drive-thrus should be suspended until air quality improves to healthier levels. An exception for handicapped drivers makes sense.

Or at least it did when I was a kid. What between being an abomination before the Lord and being reviled and hated by the very ones to whom one was presumably attracted, or wanted to be attractive to or whatever it might be . . . and then if the so called "psychiatric profession" got its hooks into you, you'd be lucky to get away with all of your brain still intact . . . and the police were the instrument that would hand you over to the so called doctor with the lobotomy in his black bag of tricks...so things have presumably changed for the better, but if the Bible is still around
and it is, then hey, no one is safe, really!

The laws have changed surely but you can't legislate bigotry out of the human heart anymore than you can legislate homosexuality out of the human libido; and so  the battle of the sexes rages on the various fronts . . . at this point I'll drop in what is in fact my primary premise which is that "homophobia" is (at its core) an instrument of imperial oppression. So some dumb street bigot is little more than a colonized Indian "wearing a uniform" doing The Mans bidding to my way of thinking, so maybe it's a coincidence that someone who is arguably one of the all  time great American patriot just changed her name from Bradley to Chelsea . . . bu I don' t think so.

Vota temprano, y muchas veces
I am driven by disillusion with the relationship of our federal government and the multinational firms that have come to feed our nation. Our children are suffering from unprecedented incidences of diseases that are directly attributable to diets full of empty calories. Federal support for agro-business subsidizes the purveyors of grain gone wrong, while local farmers raising healthy crops are left to fend for themselves.

Every drive-thru in our town is an outlet for companies who profit at our demise. These businesses should pay a premium for the privilege of having access to our locality. A drive-thru tax would counter the nefarious effects of our federal government's subsidy of the purveyors of poor food. The health of our community can be further aided by routing these revenues to youth sports programs and coupons to buy locally grown produce sold at farmer's markets.

As caring adults in our community, we need to do what we can to stand against all the adults who could care less. By putting candidates on the November ballot who speak for measures that will spare our children a lifetime of poor health, we can meet this responsibility at no cost and with minimal commitment of time and effort. Please take full advantage of this opportunity to be a responsible elector in our town.

TONIGHT Book Signing for Middletown Satire: "Downtown Drive Thru"

Tonight grab your copy of Downtown Drive Thru or purchase in person and head down to the Buttonwood Tree on Main Street to meet author and resident John Killian. Proceeds benefit the Buttonwood Tree.
FREE, 7 pm.
Local Realistic Balance Party chair, and Independent Party of Middletown chair John Killian has released a new E-Book written as a satire of local Middletown politics. Previously Killian blogged on his personal blog site : http://johnpauljustlikethepope.blogspot.com/ . The site features musings on national politics, local phenomenon, poetry, and links to performances by the author and friends. Currently on his blog space Killian has posted a history of Middletown timeline which is very helpful in reading his novel.

The book  downtown Drive Thru certainly is about "everything." The time line of Middletown's history, as expressed by Killian in his novel,is woven together with what seems to be the intention of expressing just how confusing it really it to explain to a non native born. His prose in this manner fully expresses the passion with which lifers regard this history. While character names are a bit confusing, the winding story will leave you laughing and rolling on the floor, while probably peeing on yourself. And if you are only peeing, at least you are in better shape than many of the characters in this "fictional" satire. When it comes to being critical of Middletown in order to grow as a community, if even via biting humor, certainly we share the same genre and passion for the First Amendment as Killian; we welcome him to our niche. A good read.

On the website where the e-book is available for download, Killian writes : "I thought I was writing a book about Middletown politics, but somehow it ended having more to do with the Catholic Church and Climate Change. The most accurate descriptive phrase for it is “A book about everything.”
