Candidate Bio: Angel Fernandez (R) for Planning & Zoning

Angel Fernandez (R) for Planning & Zoning
Candidate Bio Angel Fernandez (R) for Planning & Zoning:

I was born and raised in north end of Hartford and have been living in Middletown for the past 17 years.

I am married and have 3 sons. The oldest is currently serving in the Marine Corps. I was medically retired from the US Navy from injuries from the current war on terrorism after 16 years of service including reserve time.  My family stayed in Middletown while I was forward deployed in the Southwest Asia theater of Operation, since my wife's family lives here and the because of the educational system of the Middletown. I really enjoy the diversity and how the community works with each other. When I retired in 2007, I started consulting and that’s when I got involved with the Office of Emergency Management and George Dunn was the person who recruited me. At that moment I was in involved in fighting for benefits and treatment of Veterans. I was part of the Yellow Ribbon program for the Pennsylvania National Guard for almost two years until state funding ran out. I have been working directly with AMVETS as a National Warrior Transition Coordinator at a national level on the same issues and awareness for the veterans. As Deputy Director of the Office of Emergency Management, I have seen the inner workings of the city government and how budgets and other matters work. I feel more part of the community than ever since being deputy director of emergency management, because during the past few storms I got to interact with residents of Middletown and it feels wonderful when you see them either at grocery stores or church and they know you are there for them.

As the Deputy Director Of Emergency Management I run day to day operations and training of volunteer personnel, including the response to any emergency for the City of Middletown for any man-made or natural disaster. I work as a Logistical Officer with other state and federal agencies during a statewide declared state of emergency to include Middletown and surrounding communities.

I am an instructor for the US Navy Law Enforcement and Course Curriculum Developer and Anti-Terrorism for Mid-Atlantic region and Mediterranean Forces.

I have conducted research and development for the US Navy with Lockheed Martin and other government contract provider as a Subject matter Expert in Terrorism ideology and methods of operation.

I also own a small consulting firm employing military veterans.

I am and instructor of Firearms Safety and Range Officer, educating Law Enforcement and Civilians in firearms safety and develop stress induced training on how the body reacts to stress under certain extreme scenarios. l am called upon for my professional input from the Military and Law Enforcement on this subject.

I volunteer with the National Warrior Transition Coordinator AMVETS, working with Veterans from current and past wars in transitioning programs and workshops across the country.

Education
Middlesex Community College - Courses in Criminal Justice
Central State of Connecticut - Courses in Public Safety Administration.
National Incident Command Management (FEMA) all Line officer courses for Emergency Management.

North End voter shows special support for Angel Fernandez

A special sign made by a supporter for  Candidate Angel Fernandez (R) 100th District
Candidate and retired Navy Veteran Angel Fernandez met a special friend at NEAT's meet the candidate forum held last week at the Green Street Arts Center. The supporter made Fernandez a special sign then posted on Fernandez's page. Fernandez says he learned about many different cultures during his tours in Iraq, and gained an unique understanding of the universal human struggle he hopes to bring to office if elected.
https://www.facebook.com/AngelforMiddletown2013

Below is what the North End group Muslim Mothers Against Abuse posted about Fernandez:

Umm Junaid MuslimMothers AgainstAbuse Praise Allah, last week I had the good fortune of meeting this gentlemen. I want to tell you all that I was taken a back by how much he knew about Islam. Up until that night, I had been thinking about Mr. Doyl & Mathew Lesser, while I respect what Mr. Lesser has done and is trying to do. Sometimes change is good and Allah knows best. Since meeting this gentlemen, hearing where he came from, where he is coming from, what he intends to do and how much he respects Muslims. I am in his corner, I have never ever voted in my entire life. I am 40 years old. I will be voting for him, supporting him and helping him with his future campaigns Insha Allah. No one is without faults but what I have seen of this gentlemen in one night is enough for me to make an educated decision. He was brutally honest with me about he once felt about Muslims. I give it to him for doing such, if we had more people like this in the world, more LEADERS like this in the world, it would be a much better place. Thanks for sharing this James McGovern Allah is Great, change is gonna come people, trust me ... it takes time.

Rumblings! 25 Things We Learned at the Candidate's Forum

25 Things We Learned at the Westfield Residents Assoc. Middletown Canidates’ Forum.

1.       Jennifer Mahr, chairwoman & host/moderator should have her own morning show. Bubbly & professional giving equal opportunity to all with great poise all the while moderating a very contentious room. Thank you Ms. Mahr.

2.       Most in attendance were part of the entourage of the participating candidates. Candidate with the largest entourage: Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro with 11 henchpersons.

3.       Rep. Joe Serra (D) (33rd District) introduced himself and mentioned he is on the Aging Committee, Prostate & Judiciary Committee, and Alzheimer's Committee.

4.       One Westfield resident was very concerned about Euthanasia or Youth In Asia we couldn’t tell. Every candidate was asked. Seriously, excellent question.

5.       Candidate Linda Szynkowicz (R) (33rd District) if elected wants to develop a program to cut government waste & redundancy, without cutting state jobs, but by encouraging incentives for state employees to find ways to save their departments money. Szynkowicz's program would reward them with rebates. Rep. Serra said believes state government is running just fine the way it has been for the last 22 years he has been in office & there is no waste. Status Quo, keep her’go!

6.       Candidate Earle Roberts (R) (9th District) is very upset about the shooting in Shady Brook Connecticut that took the lives of elementary school children; he is very in tuned with what is going on.

7.       Candidate Senator Dante Bartolomeo (D) (13th District) feels she is “a good navigator for parents dealing with agencies such as DDS, DSS, DCF etc. because these agencies are so confusing”, as she attests to. Bartolomeo states there is so much red tape, (instead of solving this seeing as she is one the Children & Families Committee and all) it is much easier &amp &she enjoys it when all these parents must call her & go through her for help.

8.       Dan Russo, former Democratic Town Chair, has no need to end questions with actual inquiries to candidates & how dare anyone (cough) question this.

9.       Rep. Paul Doyle (D) (9th District) admitted Common Core is flawed & needs looking into. The most honest and simple statement of the evening. Well played sir.

10.   Candidate for Congress James Brown debunked all the false statements of DeLauro’s speech before she gave it, clairvoyant & awesomely entertaining. A math teacher, Mr. Brown resigned to run & is kicking butt. He also gave a great break down of the over-spending occurring in Hartford. Advice: please bring a chalk board. Unfortunately with the exception of Doyle, the other D's failed to acknowledge Connecticut is poised for a deficit at all. Must be that Common Core math...

11.   Rep. Matt Lesser (100th District) had no idea Middletown purchased a decommissioned M-CAT tank for its’ police force. Lesser also denies that state’s have the ability to regulate what the federal government gives them as far as equipment. Isn’t like you could just not take it right? What’s going on we thought you and Lil Dan were bff’s?

12.   When asked by a citizen why it was taking so long (22 years to be exact) for the lights on Route 9 and the Route 17 on ramp issue to be dealt with Rep. Joe Serra (D) (33rd District) had a unique response. “ Its very complicated. And expensive.” Said Serra. Guess it will take him another 22 years in office to actually do something. Ain’t like he is head of the Highway & Transportation Committee or anything right? Oh wait….

Navy Veteran Angel Fernadez Giving Incumbent a Run for His Money

Candidate Angel Fernandez for the 100th District
Unlike our incumbent state representative Matt Lesser, who seems “proud” of everything he touches, challenger Angel Fernandez, the first Hispanic to run in this district, is a humble man who considers it a privilege and an honor to engage in public service.

Angel is a retired US Navy man, Master at Arms Second Class. Angel was part of an elite anti-terrorist team. He served in Desert Storm and was deployed four times to Iraq and Afghanistan. He served 19 years before being retired, due to injuries he received in combat. He takes seriously, his oath to “uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies”, and as our representative in the General Assembly, will continue to fulfill that oath and protect the rights of all citizens.
Angel is active in our community. He is Deputy Director of Emergency Management in Middletown. He has served in this position for five years. He is also an active member of the PTA, serves on his child’s school advisory board and is the Executive Director of the 65th Infantry Historical Society.
Growing up in Hartford’s urban north end, Fernandez saw and experienced first-hand, the day to day struggles of low income and middle class families. He now works in a priority school district with at-risk children.
Angel is the owner of a small security consulting business.  Angel is aware of how the state’s current economic policies and taxes strangle small business, interfering with the development of new business and curtailing the growth of current business.
As our representative, Angel Fernandez will work to reverse the 371 new taxes Gov. Malloy and the Democrats have imposed on us. Reaching across the aisle, he will keep the federal government out of local education, resist unfunded mandates, whether they are from the state or federal government, and work to implement sensible policies to help returning veterans reintegrate into our communities.
On November 4th, I'll cast my ballot for Angel Fernandez, a man who says what he means and means what he says; a true man of the people. I urge you to join me in doing so.

Who is Angel Fernandez?

Candidate Angel Fernandez for the 100th
The post below was originally featured in the Hartford Courant:
"Fernandez, 45, is running for State Representative for the in the race for the 100th House District seat.
Fernandez  grew up in the North End of Hartford and has lived in Middletown for 17 years. He spent 18 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 2007 due to injury as a master-at-arms second class.
"Right now people are so disappointed with both parties," he said. "It's shocking how disconnected a lot of our politicians are with a lot of people."

Fernandez described himself as "a big Second Amendment guy" but stressed that his campaign is also focusing heavily on rolling back some Common Core education requirements and cutting taxes.

He said he felt laws already in place before new gun control laws were enacted – if they had been properly enforced – would have been sufficient to address gun violence. He also said the new laws did not address many concerns about mental health, and said as a state representative he would support the rights of gun owners.
Fernandez was served in Operation Desert Storm and was deployed four times to Iraq and Afghanistan in the recent conflicts as part of a military police unit and an anti-terrorism unit providing security.

By his view of the local political scene, elected officials are out of touch with the needs of low- and middle-income residents.

"I served and I fought for my country and I came home to find a mess," Fernandez said.
He is now the owner of Eleven Charlie, a consulting company he started with friends from the Navy. The firm provides threat assessments for corporate and public buildings. He also has volunteered as deputy director of emergency management for the city for five years.
Fernandez ran for common council in the 2013 municipal election, his first attempt at running for office, but drew one of the lowest vote tallies out of the 18 council candidates.
He faces a challenge to unseat Lesser, who is running for a fourth term in the heavily-Democratic district.

Middletown Candidates Debate Education, Who was silent?

Candidate Len Suzio
for the 13th
Last week candidates who have districts in Middlesex county gathered to debate education. All incumbents and new challengers were invited to the debate moderated by local Izzy Greenberg director of the Middlesex Coalition for Children  Nothing was off the table. The Press did a fair job of summarizing what happened at the debate, but the most interesting outcome is what the article leaves out; who was silent. Format of the debate was a 5 minute intro where the candidates could introduce themselves followed by questions asked by Greenberg in which all candidates could raise their hand and answer; some all were called on, some 3-4 where chosen to answer. Candidates Linda Syznkowicz, for the 33rd District, and candidate Len Suzio, candidate for the 13th, came out strong against Common Core. Syznkowicz, a current member of Middletown's Board of Education, made it clear part of her reasoning was that local teachers where never consulted as to the make up of the curriculum.

The Press quotes Syznkowicz as follows: Szynkowicz said Common Core ignored teachers’ input. “You lose the teachers’ personality with everything,” said Szynkowicz, a member of the Middletown Board of Education. “We are spending more time teaching to testing, not teaching to learn.” Like Syznkowicz, republican candidate Suzio echoed this assessment, and encouraged parent involvement at early ages rather than the reliance on government programs. Rep. Matt Lesser of the 100th District, who has in years past supported the early release of violent juvenile offenders, who had earned credits, spoke in favor on not incarcerating juveniles, but education them instead.

Who was silent? In all this, 20+ year veteran (11 terms) of the state legislator incumbent Rep. Joe Serra never raised his hand to answer a single question after giving his 5 minute intro. His reason for being an "expert" on education is that his wife is a retired teacher. At last months DOT presentation in Middletown dealing with the remodeling of the treacherous Route 17 on ramp to Route 9, Serra, long time chair of the Legislature's Highway committee & CASHO left early dodging the crowd & reporters both eager with questions.

October 22 Green Street Arts Center on Green St Middletown will hold its meet & greet with the candidates, open to the public.

Letter to the Editor: Environmental endorsement is "polluted"

Below is a letter to the editor.
------------------

To the Editor,
I was troubled to learn of the "bipartisan" Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV) endorsements of local candidates for the State Senate and House. The issue is that not one of the local Republican candidates received the League's questionnaire. Specifically those representing districts which include Middletown, Angel Fernandez (R-100th District), Linda Szynkowicz (R-33rd District), and Len Suzio (R-13th District) did not receive CTLCV's survey; a fact confirmed by campaign representatives upon my inquiry.

When I heard about the endorsement I called CTLCV and asked why some candidates, specifically the above, didn't receive the survey. A representative told me that CTLCV didn't have Fernandez, Szynkowicz, or Suzio’s e-mail addresses and that is the only way they distributed the survey! This is a poor excuse; physical addresses for all candidates are on file with the State Elections Enforcement Commission & a simple internet search yields plethora of was to contact all candidates.

According to CTLCV's "scorecard" candidate Len Suzio had a 100% pro-environment voting record during his two years in the state senate. Suzio was the only senator with a 100% perfect record during those 2 years! Furthermore, Suzio was an outspoken opponent of the Haddam Land swap which the CTLCV was very opposed to. Ironically, Suzio is a dues paying member of the League and also is active and a dues paying member with the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association; both credible environmentally conscientious bodies.

It is obvious to me CTLCV was looking for an excuse not to endorse Suzio and other local Republican candidates. According CLCV, their Board is 50/50 Democrat/Republican and a candidate needs a 65% vote from the Board to get endorsed. This year to date, CTLCV has endorsed 2 Republican candidates and 13 Democrats; how many actual candidates of both parties received the qualifying survey is unclear. Only after the endorsements were given is the annually revised survey available on the group’s website. But it is stunning that the League would not endorse Suzio, a candidate with a perfect environmental voting record and who also is a dues-paying member of the League and another pro-environment group.

It is all too convenient for CTCV to play the “ actus me invite pactus, non es meus actus” card, in other words the dog ate my homework, or in this case didn’t email it - when it comes to endorsements. Simply said, the process in which this so-called credible & “bipartisan” body reached its conclusions of whom to endorse appears more polluted than the environment they vow to protect.

As our group and our members look forward to the election this November, we are faced with a stark choice for the leadership of our State. The CCDL Executive Board votes to endorse the following candidates for office that we feel best represent the interests of Connecticut gun owners and our desire to preserve
the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States and Article One, Section 15 of the Connecticut State Constitution, along with the leadership abilities to move Connecticut forward. We recognize that not all members of CCDL nor all Connecticut gun owners will agree with these endorsements and we fully support everyone’s individual right to vote for the candidates of their own choosing.

After carefully considering all of these issues, the CCDL Executive Board endorses Tom Foley and Heather Somers, for the Office of Governor and Lt. Governor. Governor Dannel Malloy has a proven track record of supporting anti-rights legislation and has vilified and ostracized Connecticut gun owners throughout his term. It is time for him to be to be replaced. We strongly believe that the team of Tom Foley and Heather Somers will take Connecticut in a new direction that is so desperately needed.
We also endorse the candidates below for statewide offices and the General Assembly. As with our endorsement for Governor/Lt. Governor, we feel these candidates will help steer Connecticut in the right direction. CCDL reserves the right to endorse other candidates as they are vetted by the Executive Board.

Your Daily Spin: Eric Kuhn "Republican's hate Black People"

Eric Kuhn
The Middletown Press published a letter from resident Eric Kuhn in which he implies more or less all Connecticut Republicans are racist bigots by saying "the Connecticut GOP must choose between appealing to black or anti black voter." Kuhn, a local musician and Middletown Eye writer, writes letters to the Press on a regular basis the consistent theme of  persecuting conservatives.Perhaps he is angling for a regular column? His letter is linked below:
Kuhn writes:  "I think Republican politicians in this state know perfectly well that a part of their natural constituency is people who       hate black people."
Isn't it wonderful that we have Mr. Kuhn here to pontificate  what each and every Republican, not just in CT but the whole country, thinks about each and every issue? Why, we wouldn't know what we're supposed to believe if he weren't here to tell us. And, of course, he has the credentials and qualifications to do so (remind us - what are they again?). What do you think Mr. Kuhn's reaction would be if a Republican were to paint all Democrats with such a broad brush?
Without intending to write an Apologia Pro Vita Republicana,we are confident enough to state that most Republicans believe that this country was founded on the belief that each and every individual has natural rights that cannot be taken away by governmental fiat, that all laws should apply to all of us the same way, that individual persons are better suited to determine their own destinies and to decide what is in their own best interests than the progressive-liberals down in Central Planning, that taking people's property from them and giving it to someone else is theft, that each person should be judged on his or her own merit, not by what group he or she belongs to, and that large concentrations of money and power, whether in corporate or governmental hands, represent a threat to individual liberty.

Now Mr. Kuhn, why don't you tell us what you stand for?
PS: "Founded in 1866, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) extended into almost every southern state by 1870 and became a vehicle for white southern resistance to the Republican Party’s Reconstruction-era policies aimed at establishing political and economic equality for blacks. "Source: The History Channel: http://www.history.com/topics/ku-klux-klan. Below Middletown Insider writer Billboy Baggins responds to Eric Kuhns letter to the Press:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Editor,

Eric Kuhn's false and distasteful comments from 29 July are an act of desperation.  He and others of the far left ilk can read the writing on the wall; the Democrat party is about to fall.  And hard.

For years, the Democrat tactic has been to divide Americans along economic, social and racial lines.  Until recently, it has worked.  But no more.  Blacks, Hispanics and us whites too, have become acutely aware of the emptiness of Democrat promises.  Disillusioned by an increasing tax burden, declining employment opportunities, skyrocketing public debt, porous borders and the abuse of governmental power, Kuhn sees minorities being draw to the GOP.

Frantically reaching for straws, he again attempts to divide Americans by claiming Republicans want to prevent non-whites from voting. While he cannot find a single example of this anywhere, we have a Justice Dept. that refused to prosecute the New Black Panthers who stood outside polling places in Philly, dressed in berets,  jackboots and billy clubs; an obvious attempt to intimidate non-black voters.

It takes an empty soul, or at least an empty hat, for one to claim Republicans have a "natural constituency" of people who hate blacks.  I guess that makes black Republicans "Uncle Toms".  Regina Roundtree, founder of CT-BRAC, is a Republican and a personal friend. Theresa Tillett (black) is running for senate in the 2nd District and Angel Fernandez (Puerto Rican) is running for state rep in the 33rd and both are personal friends; and Republican.  We are friends because we share a common interest in a love of country, liberty, and the Constitution.  While Democrats engage in race baiting, this is a banner we can unite behind.

Middletown Veteran & Candidate Angel Fernandez Receives Award for Rescue Efforts

Angel Fernandez
Local veteran & Deputy Chief of Middletown's Emergency management Angel Fernandez reminisces as he marks the decade anniversary of his receiving a special award for going above the call of duty to serve the public. Fernandez, who is also the Deputy Director of the  National 65th Regiment Historical Society and former Amvet Warrior Transition Coordinator (a national position with a 1 year term), was honored for heroic actions which helped to save lives. Fernandez received this honor in 2004, and 10 years later, still recounts the day as one that made him want to better serve his community by running for public office.

Currently, Fernandez, a conservative Republican, is running for State Legislator in the 100th District, much of which is comprised of Middletown. Fernandez studied Public Safety Administration and Criminal Justice at Central Connecticut State University. Fernandez is a veteran, having served in combat during wartime.  Fernandez was enlisted in the U.S. Navy from  1989 to 2007. Upon retirement from the Navy in 2007, he received the J. Edgar Hoover award. Fernandez has young children in the Middletown public school system, and is the father of a soldier currently serving overseas.

When asked for this article what he learned in his military career that will make him suitable as a state representative, Fernandez said:

Conceptualized over 4 years ago,
The Five Conflict Memorial

 Middletown was dedicated this past

Memorial Day . Fernandez played a key role in

working with local, state, & national

Veterans' organizations to bring the project to fruition.
Having himself served in combat, this project was
 particularly important for Fernandez.
“What I learned in the military is that you listen to your people and take care of them. Be honest during good and bad moments. Honesty will take you a long way. Lying will do nothing but diminish your character as a leader. That's my game plan as a legislator; to use my leadership skills to help people understand that I am living and sacrificing on a daily basis. I know what it is to struggle in our state's current economy. I can relate to any resident because that’s what I did whenever I went to foreign country; I trained to understand people of different cultures and diversities.”

Fernandez, founder/president of  Eleven Charlie LLC, a security training company,  previously captured the spirit of altruism & giving back to the community when he donated specialized disaster training to Middletown Emergency crews and police.

West Hartford, Conn. - The last thing Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Angel Fernandez (PJ) expected to deal with as he drove down Interstate 84 on March 12 was a multi-vehicle accident, but that was exactly the hand life dealt him. Six weeks later, Fernandez was recognized by the West Hartford Police Department (WHPD) for his role in responding to the accident and rendering first aid to the victims.

In a ceremony at City Hall last Friday, Fernandez and seven other citizens, were awarded the WHPD Recognition Award, which is given to citizens and officers who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist the WHPD and the general public.

Fernandez said he had just left work and was on his way to a medical appointment when fate steered him in another direction."I was driving west on I-84 when an eastbound driver crossed the median and hit a vehicle," said Fernandez. "Nobody was stopping; so I turned around, turned my lights on, deployed flares and secured the scene."
After a passing motorist called 911, Fernandez was working solo for five minutes before two officers from the WHPD arrived on scene.

"When we (WHPD Officers James Mahon and Brian Wallace) arrived, we saw that Fernandez had shut down a traffic lane by himself...and that's not easy. We have trouble doing that with our cruisers," said Wallace.

While other emergency personnel were en route to the scene, Fernandez began first aid. One victim was lying in the middle of the road and the others were trapped in their vehicles.

"There were a lot of broken legs and head and chest injuries," said Fernandez. "As emergency personnel extracted the victims from their vehicles, I relayed information to the emergency personnel. I also talked with the victims, maintained their vital signs and helped get them stabilized."

Assistant Police Chief Robert McCue said it is difficult to measure the amount of lives saved by Fernandez' actions.
