Press Release: 'Wreaths Across America Day' in Old Saybrook, CT

'Wreaths Across America Day' in Old Saybrook Visit is an Official Stop for Caravan en Route to Arlington National Cemetery
WAA- Arlington National Cemetery
WAA- Arlington National Cemetery
OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. - Nov. 17, 2015 - PRLog -- "Wreaths Across America", a traveling caravan escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders, will again return to Old Saybrook on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, with an estimated time of arrival at 11:30 a.m., followed by a noontime wreath-laying on Main Street at the Town Green War Memorial (next to Old Saybrook Fire Headquarters) attended by local veterans, townspeople, dignitaries and students.

Old Saybrook is a major official stop in Connecticut as the Wreaths Across America caravan travels to Arlington National Cemetery, where the group will place wreaths on the graves of thousands of fallen soldiers. Old Saybrook has turned out in force to honor the traveling caravan in past years, so the Maine-based group will make the shoreline town a major stop again this year.

Enough Politically Correct Nonsense!

This Veterans Day I was again reminded of just how connected we are as a community by our love of this country and the principles it was founded on.  Thanks to what some would describe as our traditional American upbringing, we share a language, history, and culture, a notion of right and wrong, and a little common sense too.

I said in a speech on the town green yesterday – “Our freedom is the most important and defining characteristic that makes us Americans – and without it, we are without self or purpose – or a future.”   I am proud to have said that as it speaks to why I do what I do, and why it’s so important.
There is surely ruthless and physical evil in the world (such as terrorism) that needs to be combated.  I am so thankful to live in America where our way of life and our safety is willfully guaranteed by the sacrifice of the men and women of our armed forces.

Washington Times: Arlington National Cemetery Short 30,000 Wreaths, Financial Help Needed.

Photos by Bill Boylan

This past summer, I had the opportunity to visit Wreaths Across America, headquartered in Columbia ME.  Now, according to Jessica Chasmar of The Washington Times, Wreaths Across America lacks the necessary funding to place wreaths on all the Graves at Arlington National Cemetery, a tradition started in 1992.  Please re-post this and send them a few bucks.

Staff member tells the story behind this wall hanging to two visitors.

From the Times:

The nonprofit responsible for placing wreaths on 230,000 headstones at Arlington National Cemetery expects to be 30,000 wreaths short this year due to a lack of funding.

Wreaths Across America said Wednesday night that it is $450,000 short of reaching its goal for its Tuesday deadline. More than 100 volunteers plan to place the wreaths on individual headstones on Dec. 12, and Wreaths Across America, which is not government sponsored, was supposed to raise $3.45 million to finish the project, The Washington Examiner reported.

The group’s team captain Bre Kingsbury said they are hoping for more donors to step forward before the fundraising deadline. Each wreath is $15 and donors can contribute directly at wreathsacrossamerica.org.

"Today" by Jerry Augustine

Guest blog by local Jerry Augustine.

Today I….
Today I... crawled out of my cloud, (aka king size bed) , which I cling to the edge as if I am about to slide down the side of a mountain. I do not know why I do this as there is about an acre of space on this mattress where I could spread out doing perpetual snow eagles all over it. I also have recurring dreams, or you could easily reclassify them as nightmares, of falling in space. I do hope I never land!

I made my way to the Klekolo coffee shop, still in a cloud, because as I get older it takes about two hours before my head clears to face the wonderments of todays society. We meet daily at approximately 6:30 a.m. to discuss whatever is on someones mind at that time of day. There is an interesting group of characters that show up to have their morning jolt.

There are bicyclists , runners, police officers, retirees, bank officials, war veterans, mechanics, journalists, and those heading to work at their day jobs. Those are the ones that I have met so far. And they are there every day.

The topics discussed have to be competitive with the CNN news channel. I have heard talks on coin collecting, gun collecting, all antiques, car collecting and repair,
building, real estate, medical problems, insurance, veteran benefits,--it just doesn't end.

The different brews that I've witnessed that these customers enjoy could fill a large book. The drinks vary from $1.50 to $6.00 and above.

There are capachinos, lattes, espressos, dark roast, light roast, medium roast,
and everything you could imagine in between, specialty drinks are their forte.
I've seen drinks you wouldn't even try to call coffee. One large clear glass mug my friend has every morning is a five dollar wonder. Yes, I wonder what it is. It consists of three tiers and resembles one of those colored sand sculptures. Tan, pink and brown. The brown must be the coffee. When I first saw this I thought he was drinking sand.

Anyway it's a great way to start the day as I am always off to fulfill my day with adventures.

I either drive for St. Lukes to take elderly or disabled veterans to their appointments,
maintain my yard, work on classic cars, or do the things on my to-do list which never seems to get short!

Rumblings: Nice guys finish last... or not at all.

1. ABANDONED: Mayor Dan Drew stated on the council floor he was going to have a report done to see how the 2013 blizzard that crippled the city could have been handled better. Rumors were that Danapolean gave the word to turn away help from the National Guard & there was a chest puffing match behind closed doors resulting in Middletown roads still being uncleared days later. No report.

2. ABANDONED: Mayor Drew & Gov. Malloy went to China in 2012 to "find jobs" and promised Councilman Pessina that a report would follow. And all that trade Drew said he opened up? How is China helping Middletown?? No report.

3. ABANDONED: Under Mayor Drew the Youth Services department launched a new website with reports with updates about activites. The website was last updated in Nov 6, 2013 Cuz he's "young guy mayor" Danny did start the Yoot Youth Cabinet (not to be confused with the already in existence Youth in Government Program cauz if you rename somethin you can take credit for it duh)

4. ABANDONED: Mayor Drew's twitter boasts a computer rendering of LED lights on the Arrigoni Bridge. Critics & the town of Portland felt the idea to "bring tourist" excessive. Why such a "great tourism destination" quietly abandoned by the Mayor if it was so awesome?

5. FINISHED: Both budget's under Mayor Drew's regime resulted in milrate increases for taxpayers. The democrats on council voted against all proposals for senior tax relief under the previous republican mayor, yet endorsed a watered down proposal from Mayor Drew while simultaneously raising taxes for everyone else two fiscal years in a row! 3X a charm?

6. STARTED: Mayor Drew advocated for the merging of Park & Recreation and Public works as well as the City Attorney's office and Personnel Depts. to "save money" No cost savings have ever been proven upon inquiry. In fact, outside Counsel is stilled used by the Office of General Counsel at tune of $60K for the investigation into the allegeded drug abuse allegations against the police chief. In 2013 he told the Courant he expected to save more than $150K a year; in other sources Drew is quoted saying the savings is in the MILLIONS. It has been a year & no cost savings have been proven.

7. ABANDONED: Several commitee vacancies have remained unfilled by Drewilishious. Example: Design Review & Inlands & Watercourses, Citizens' Advisory have  had  vacancies for the entire 3 years Drew has been in office. Drew has had time to redecorate the Mayor's office to the tune of $6K.

8.ABANDONED: 20 monthes later...all those grants Danious Maxious got. The bike path, the parking lot redo's,the parking garage... so how yall citizen's enjoying those? Give them bread and circuses...

9. ABANDONED: City Hall news letter. When Drewocles took office he initiated the practice of wishing workers happy birthday via special email, a practice most hadn't had the priveledge of experiencing since elementary school. He also initiated a city hall newsletter. The last publication of which was July 2012.

10. ABANDONED: Mayor Drew put out a mandate that all committee meetings take place after 7 pm so that members of the public could attend. Clean Energy Task Force still meets at noon 3 years later. And the Harbor Improvement Committee NEVER has met despite the focus on the spanking new riverfront.

11. FINISHED (NOT REALLY): Mayor Drew ran on the campaign to end all lawsuits and grievances between the city, union members and the Board of Education. He even held a press conference declaring that the smoke was clear. However, lawsuits still exist 3 years later....

12. ALMOST NOT FINISHED: Just in time for Veterans' Day: Trees of Honor, the memorial dedicated to fallen Connecticut Soldiers of the Irag and Afganistan Wars is underway at  Veteran's Park in Middletown. After the photo ops with the Big Dannel were over, Mayor Drew went a little MIA on the details of the two+ year project. The ribbon cutting of the memorial was scheduled. What did Drew forget? The planting of the actual trees!! President of the City (D's prefferred moniker) forgot to secure resources - ie heavy equipment and man hours to get this done... so at the last minute project volunteers scrambled to get help to get 65 large trees in the ground before the dedication. Not even Joe Samolis, Mayor's Aide, could get this accomplished & the man has had to shovel some hefy mayoral do-do. Organizers contacted local papers  to put the call out for help; the papers convenietly leaving out the fact that the holes had yet to be excavated literally days before the opening...several TOH organizers posted requests via personal social media pages &amp sent emails in an effort  to dig the project out of the perdicament Drew left them with... Luckily, volunteers hauled a**  & finished the job beautifully. Gee.. thanks Mayor D...

Unlucky 13: ABANDONED:
ANYONE kept tally of how much money has been
appropriated every month by the Council?!?!
Just about every meeting the Common Council approves requests for additional funds to departments above and beyond what was allocated in the fiscal budget proposed by Mayor Drew and approved by the council. No news source has reported how much has been spent and when asked certain council persons have stated the budget is "fluid"... the bleeding of taxpayers has been STARTED.....

Middletown Veteran & Candidate Angel Fernandez Receives Award for Rescue Efforts

Angel Fernandez
Local veteran & Deputy Chief of Middletown's Emergency management Angel Fernandez reminisces as he marks the decade anniversary of his receiving a special award for going above the call of duty to serve the public. Fernandez, who is also the Deputy Director of the  National 65th Regiment Historical Society and former Amvet Warrior Transition Coordinator (a national position with a 1 year term), was honored for heroic actions which helped to save lives. Fernandez received this honor in 2004, and 10 years later, still recounts the day as one that made him want to better serve his community by running for public office.

Currently, Fernandez, a conservative Republican, is running for State Legislator in the 100th District, much of which is comprised of Middletown. Fernandez studied Public Safety Administration and Criminal Justice at Central Connecticut State University. Fernandez is a veteran, having served in combat during wartime.  Fernandez was enlisted in the U.S. Navy from  1989 to 2007. Upon retirement from the Navy in 2007, he received the J. Edgar Hoover award. Fernandez has young children in the Middletown public school system, and is the father of a soldier currently serving overseas.

When asked for this article what he learned in his military career that will make him suitable as a state representative, Fernandez said:

Conceptualized over 4 years ago,
The Five Conflict Memorial

 Middletown was dedicated this past

Memorial Day . Fernandez played a key role in

working with local, state, & national

Veterans' organizations to bring the project to fruition.
Having himself served in combat, this project was
 particularly important for Fernandez.
“What I learned in the military is that you listen to your people and take care of them. Be honest during good and bad moments. Honesty will take you a long way. Lying will do nothing but diminish your character as a leader. That's my game plan as a legislator; to use my leadership skills to help people understand that I am living and sacrificing on a daily basis. I know what it is to struggle in our state's current economy. I can relate to any resident because that’s what I did whenever I went to foreign country; I trained to understand people of different cultures and diversities.”

Fernandez, founder/president of  Eleven Charlie LLC, a security training company,  previously captured the spirit of altruism & giving back to the community when he donated specialized disaster training to Middletown Emergency crews and police.

Read about this training project in our previous article here: http://www.middletowninsider.com/2013/06/citizen-angel-fernandez-donates.html

West Hartford, Conn. - The last thing Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Angel Fernandez (PJ) expected to deal with as he drove down Interstate 84 on March 12 was a multi-vehicle accident, but that was exactly the hand life dealt him. Six weeks later, Fernandez was recognized by the West Hartford Police Department (WHPD) for his role in responding to the accident and rendering first aid to the victims.

In a ceremony at City Hall last Friday, Fernandez and seven other citizens, were awarded the WHPD Recognition Award, which is given to citizens and officers who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist the WHPD and the general public.

Fernandez said he had just left work and was on his way to a medical appointment when fate steered him in another direction."I was driving west on I-84 when an eastbound driver crossed the median and hit a vehicle," said Fernandez. "Nobody was stopping; so I turned around, turned my lights on, deployed flares and secured the scene."
After a passing motorist called 911, Fernandez was working solo for five minutes before two officers from the WHPD arrived on scene.

"When we (WHPD Officers James Mahon and Brian Wallace) arrived, we saw that Fernandez had shut down a traffic lane by himself...and that's not easy. We have trouble doing that with our cruisers," said Wallace.

While other emergency personnel were en route to the scene, Fernandez began first aid. One victim was lying in the middle of the road and the others were trapped in their vehicles.

"There were a lot of broken legs and head and chest injuries," said Fernandez. "As emergency personnel extracted the victims from their vehicles, I relayed information to the emergency personnel. I also talked with the victims, maintained their vital signs and helped get them stabilized."

Assistant Police Chief Robert McCue said it is difficult to measure the amount of lives saved by Fernandez' actions.

Letter to the Editor: Cost of Living increases for military retirees under 62 are gone.

The essay reflects views and opinions not necessarily shared by the Insider staff, and is published as a courtesy to readers.
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.middletownpress.com/government-and-politics/20131218/bipartisan-b
udget-agreement-clears-congress

Cost of Living increases for military retirees under 62 are gone.

Where is a matching provision for former members of congress?  Will they
still get cost-of-living increases when they retire?
Where is a matching provision for federal civilian employees?  Will they
still get cost-of-living increases when they retire?

This is shameful.  The members of congress who voted for this are
self-serving hypocrites.  They know there's a problem, but they are
unwilling to share in the cuts themselves.  I, for one, am sick and tired of
the hand-wringing, ever-so-sorry-I-have-to-do-this act by the individuals
who serve in elected office.  They are very willing to have others sacrifice
in order to balance the budget.  Where is the shared sacrifice?  The
congress has set things up so that they automatically receive salary
increases, so that there's no public vote.  Congress and the President need
to start showing some leadership.  Lead by Example!  That is one of the
first principles taught to every officer and non-commissioned officer in the
military services of the United States.  There has been very little of that
when congress and the president have discussed the budget.  There has not
been a single proposal aimed at cutting salaries or pensions of elected
officials or what is spent in maintaining the congress.  Their excuse is
that 'they need to attract qualified people'.  Well, think about it!  If
congress needs to attract qualified people, doesn't the military need to do
the same?  Or, is congress suggesting that the military doesn't need
highly-trained, highly-skilled, qualified individuals to serve in uniform?
Are they suggesting that the military can make do with whatever they can
scrape up?

I could go on this rant for a long time.  This is about more than just a
cost-of-living increase.  This is about the way this president and this
congress are running this country.  The basic idea of reducing pensions for
working age individuals is actually a good idea, but, it should be across
the board.  It should start with elected officials and civilian employees,
NOT with the military.  Write to your congressman.  Tell them to quit
playing around.  If they are serious about running this country, show some
backbone and leadership.  They need to set the example by cutting their own
spending.  If they want to cut salaries, start with their own.  Once they do
that, I'll be willing to start sharing in the sacrifice and I'll start
trusting that they actually put the interest of this country ahead of
self-interest.

Guestblog: Why We Are Screwed by Tim Lenox

Guestblog by Connecticut resident and activist Tim Lenox. The Middletown Insider publishes guestblogs as a courtesy to readers, opinions expressed may not be that of the Insider staff.

For those who missed them ... Lenox's last three guest blogs are published here :

Welcome back Tim!
---------------------------------------------------------
Why We Are Screwed
By Tim Lenox, RUV
First a little history reminder --- Remember Black Hawk Down ???
Many will try to remember when that movie came out but I am talking about the actual event.  It is a sad thing but when movies come out that are “based on actual events” people who see them believe that the movie made is what really happened and any news stories covering the events are just movie reviews.  Reality TV is thought to be Reality and Movies are what people remember as History.  Then parents wonder why their children seem so “Clueless” (that was a movie too).
I leave it up to those who know how to do research to actually do some of it and I will focus on the most important points.
Bill Clinton was President, Wesley Clark was Supreme Commander of NATO (to hear him talk) and they ordered the US military to do something Veterans everywhere will consider anathema --- Leave soldiers behind …
As bodies of fallen US soldiers were dragged through streets and desecrated, President Clinton wrung his hands and Osama Bin Laden told all his friends that America was a “Paper Tiger”.  Paper Tiger was a termed first coined by Japanese Military Advisors to their Emperor when describing how America looked tough on paper but was too fearful of “World Public Opinion” to actually do anything but roar loudly.  “All Bark and No Bite” is another version of that saying.
The point is that a publicly weak America invites attack.  Terrorists had Declared War on the United States and the Clinton Administration (along with all other democrats) saw every terror attack as a crime to be solved the way it is on TV.  Series such as Law and Order, CSI, and NCIS have shown how Lawyers and Police can bring everyone to Justice.  The long list of victims just makes for better television ratings.
Every Terror attack was treated like a crime committed by isolated criminals who have to be found and brought to justice through the use of expensive forensics and courtroom drama.  This is how the War on Terror was fought and would have been fought if Al Gore had been elected instead of George W Bush.
It is also how it is being fought now.  Terrorism is not even acknowledged.  Even Major Nidal Hassan confessing to a Terror Attack against the US Military and begging for execution will not stop a Democratic Administration from referring to that attack as “Workplace Violence”.  Osama Bin Laden is dead and therefore the War on Terror is over.  (… and … scene)
So now we have the issue of Syria and the “Red Line” which has been crossed a year to the day after that “Red Line” had been publicly drawn.  Weapons of Mass Destruction have been used.  The President is preparing to attack a Sovereign Nation and take a side in a Civil War.  This is why Republican Presidents such as Richard Nixon are publicly denounced as warmongers.
The denouncers conveniently ignore the fact that it was Presidents Kennedy and Johnson who got us involved in that war because it was easier to hate and blame Nixon.  They also ignore the fact that the US Military won that war only to have the Democrats in Congress surrender it.
They used the same propaganda tactics to make it look like “Bush Lied” about Weapons of Mass Destruction even after it was determined that Saddam Hussein’s weapons had been shipped to Syria.  Now that those exact same WMDs that Bush was accused of lying about have been used by the Syrian Government against the Syrian people, those same denouncers are silent.
Did you catch that?  Saddam Hussein’s Chemical Weapons that Bush’s Denouncers claim did not exist are now being used by the Syrian Government as justification for US Involvement and Bush’s Denouncers are saying … what ???
I shall leave the rest of the comparisons to those who are making them and instead ask you all to focus on exactly why we are screwed no matter what happens.
If President Obama orders any attack then Governments around the world will see a repeat of the Vietnam War started by the Kennedy/Johnson administration and know that America will surrender and retreat just as during the Clinton Administration.
Even if a Republican is elected in 2016, the War will be propagandized by the Liberal Media and surrendered by Congressional Democrats.  Maybe they can even get Jane Fonda to pose on another Anti-Aircraft Artillery gun just after it shoots down a US plane.  Hollywood will make another movie and the American people will blame the Republicans.
If President Obama does nothing after his “Red Line” has been crossed, then ALL of the other nations in the world will once again see America as a “Paper Tiger”.  The enemies of America will be planning the next attack on American soil.
They will be praising Allah (or whatever name they call their view of God) that this is only the start of Obama’s second term.
They will be hoping to launch that attack while he is still in office.
They will be praying that his successor will be another Democrat who sees War as criminal activity to be solved through diplomacy and court systems.
What they will not be doing is taking anything any American says seriously.
Remember, this is what you voted for … What? … You didn’t vote for this? … Well … Somebody did and it wasn’t me !!!
