NumbersUSA - USA Today says end Chain Migration

This Issue: USA Today Editorial Shifts Immigration Debate to Chain Migration

Fri, Mar 31th
When a mainstream media outlet calls for an end to Chain Migration, the debate over legal immigration is heading in the right direction!
Earlier this week, the editorial board for the nation's largest newspaper, USA Today, offered a quasi-endorsement of Pres. Trump's proposal to move the legal immigration system away from favoring extended family connections and towards placing a greater emphasis on one's skills. You can read the full editorial here.
...if what the president means [by merit-based immigration] is that a higher percentage of immigrants to the United States should be selected for their skill levels rather than family connections, he is right.

While America has a number of short-term visa programs for skilled foreigners, the bulk of immigrant visas -- those with a direct path to permanent residency -- are awarded on the basis of a family relationship.

-- USA Today editorial board
This sort of commentary from a mainstream news outlet was unheard of several months ago. The tendency for the MSM has been to side with the big businesses that seek cheap, foreign labor and provide news outlets with coveted advertising dollars. But Pres. Trump's focus throughout the campaign on protecting American workers, particularly those who have been impacted by massive amounts of unskilled labor through legal immigration, has opened the door for a debate shift.
In fact, a few passages from the USA Today editorial sounded less like the country's establishment media and more like what one would find on the NumbersUSA website.
People coming in on a family reunification visa generally have modest job skills. ... when numerous jobs in semi-skilled areas have disappeared, importing hundreds of thousands of low-skilled workers a year makes little sense.
The USA Today editorial wasn't perfect, however. First, they mischaracterized the points-based system in the 2007 Kennedy-Bush-McCain amnesty bill that would have replaced the family-preference system. The bill did eliminate the chain migration green card categories, but replaced it with a system that would have awarded points, not just for skills and education, but also for extended family connections.
Second, the editorial board threw its support behind a proposal similar to the STAPLE Act -- a bill that would "staple" green cards to the diplomas of certain foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges and universities.
Still, the focus on ending chain migration and adding that "family-based immigration account for about half of the total" of annual green cards is positive and a move in the right direction. That sentiment should spill over to the paper's coverage of the RAISE Act, introduced by Sens. Tom Cotton and David Perdue, that would end chain migration.
NumbersUSA was founded on the mission to reduce overall immigration numbers, including an end to Chain Migration. Ending Chain Migration was also a key recommendation of the last bipartisan commission for immigration reform chaired by the late Civil Rights icon Barbara Jordan. The Commission sought to reduce annual green card numbers to 550,000 primarily by ending Chain Migration and the Visa Lottery. The Cotton/Perdue RAISE Act would do exactly that -- end Chain Migration and the Visa Lottery.
Hopefully, more mainstream news outlets will follow USA Today's lead and expand the immigration debate to include a discussion over issues like chain migration. More examples like this could motivate the Trump administration to move reducing legal immigration up the priority list.

"FROM BEHIND BARS" - A Series, Part 72 - Day 2224

Image from One Faith One Church
This is the seventy second installation of a periodic series of letters written to and from someone currently in the custody of the Connecticut Department of Correction.

In this issue, our correspondent talks about his new cellie, filing a grievance against Dr. Valletta who was allowed to investigate himself, another prisoner suffering from Renaud's Disease who was not being accommodated under the Americans with Disabilities Act, his expectation of retaliation or at least being moved, for the trouble he has stirred up.  (Since then, he has been moved.)

These letters, submitted anonymously, are redacted to protect the privacy of the writer and the writer's family and friends.

As time went by, the letter became more personal, revealing the emotional and physical distresses endured by those committed to Connecticut's prisons. These distresses are not confined (no pun intended) to just the prisoner, but extend to the prisoner's family and friends. And we pay for it.

After examining the trial transcripts and speaking extensively to others with first hand knowledge of the matter, I'm of the opinion that this person is innocent of the crime for which he was convicted; his council being incompetent and ineffective.  Please keep an open mind and take the letters at face value.

Anyone wishing to write to our correspondent may send a letter to middletowninsider@gmail.com and I will see it is forwarded.  In the subject line, please put “Behind Bars” and address your letter to “Dear Pen Pal”.  While I can’t promise a personal response, I will see to it that you get it, if you provide me with your mailing address.  Your letters will be publish, both to and from, after redacting any personally identifying information.  The writers' identities will never be disclosed.  That info will forever remain confidential.

Day 2224

Oath Keepers Call to Action: Stand and Defend Free Speech at Berkeley Patriots Rally, April 15, 2017

by Stewart Rhodes

Oath Keepers Operation First Defenders

Calling on all Oath Keepers (and all Three Percenters, military veterans, patriot police officers, bikers, and all other brave American patriots):
Seeking capable volunteers for an overt security detail for the "Patriots Day Free Speech Rally" to be held on April 15, 2017, at 12PM PDT, in the Martin Luther King Jr. Park, 2151 M.L.K. Jr Way, Berkeley, CA 94704.
Team Leader for the Oath Keepers on the ground April 15 will be John Karriman (Missouri police academy defensive tactics instructor and team leader on both of our Ferguson operations in 2014-2015).
Contact email for security volunteers:   berkeley@oathkeepers.org
It's time, once again, to step up and stand in the breach to defend the rights of the American people to free speech and assembly, in the face of radical leftists who use violence and the threat of violence to shut down and silence free speech they don't like (just like we did with roving security teams at the Inauguration in Washington DC, on January 20, 2017).
Confirmed Oath Keepers members will be given priority for this April 15 detail, but if you are from another group, or a qualified individual with the right training or experience, please contact us as well (but please understand there will be a vetting process).   If you are leadership from another patriot organization that would like to help with security by sending your own security detail to this event, please contact us and we will put you in touch with the event organizers and also establish the necessary lines of communication with our security team leadership.
Our local Alameda County Oath Keepers chapter has committed fully to this operation.  In addition, one of our local members, a young Marine Afghanistan veteran, is part of the event organizing team for the event sponsor, Liberty Revival Alliance.    This means we have the necessary competent local leadership that we need in place to conduct such an operation

And with John Karriman agreeing to fly out to California to be the team leader on the ground for our security element, we also will have an extremely experienced and respected field team leader our members from around the nation know and trust.

Malloy - Limitless Incompetence Puts CT at the Bottom

Malloy's Connecticut Earns Another Bottom Ranking for Doctors

In Dan Malloy’s Connecticut, none of the state’s population have been spared from the consequences of the failed governor’s disastrous policies. The latest group to feel the increasing burden of Malloy’s negligence are Connecticut’s healthcare professionals.

In their new rankings of the best and worst states in the country for doctors, Connecticut is ranked 45th overall and second to last for opportunity and competition. Already ranked 43rd  for business by CNBC and 45th for economic freedom by the CATO Institute, Malloy’s Connecticut has yet another bottom ranking to add to its growing list.

In his limitless incompetence, Dan Malloy is sparing none of his state’s citizens from the catastrophic policies he continues to impose. As Connecticut continues to fall further behind the rest of the country in almost every area, it becomes clearer that new leadership is direly needed.

Fire House Food Drive on April 8th to Benefit SSKP

For the sixth year in a row, CT shoreline fire departments will host a one-day food drive on Sat. April 8th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to collect non-perishable food for shoreline residents in need.

All donations will go to local food pantries run by The Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries.

SSKP hopes to include all fire departments in the 11 shoreline towns they serve. Fire departments already committed to the event include: Old Saybrook FD, 310 Main Street; (and once again this year, drop-offs will also be accepted by the OSFD at the Stop and Shop in Old Saybrook and the Big Y in Old Saybrook); Westbrook FD, 15 South Main Street; Essex FD, 11 Saybrook Road; Clinton FD, 35 East Main Street; North Madison FD, 864 Opening Hill Road; and Chester FD, 6 High Street. All area fire departments are encouraged to participate.

At a time of year when food donations are low, this food drive will help to restock the pantries and ensure that everyone in our local communities will have a place at the table. The Soup Kitchens' (See photos from last years food drive)

Peter Lumaj Creates Exploritory Committee

I was incredibly dismayed to hear the news about Aetna Inc. and their possible relocation to Boston. Years of failed liberal policies and high taxation have put our state on the slope of steady decline and our business community is feeling its effects - they simply cannot take these hits anymore.

This move by Aetna, would be a major blow to the Connecticut economy and it comes right on the heals of General Electric relocating their headquarters from Fairfield to Boston.
The failed liberal policies of Governor Malloy and the effects of decades of one party rule in Hartford are stifling job creation and economic development in Connecticut.

The time has come for a fresh start for Connecticut. We need a fresh approach and a new perspective to how we do business in our state. We cannot let the career politicians continue to enact policies that hamper job creation and drive out our employers.

We need to create a business environment for Connecticut that encourages growth and innovation. An environment with low taxes, fair regulations and predictability - a fresh start for Connecticut.

I'm hoping that you will join with me and my LUMAJ EXPLORE team to create a #FreshStart4CT! Will you join with us and donate $100 (or what you can afford) today to help us in our exploratory effort? This is an enormous undertaking, but I'm confident that if strong, courageous, conservative leaders stand together - we will be able to save our state.

Best Regards,

Peter Lumaj
