Middletown School Propoganda: For the Children or Waste of Money?

Existing App for News from MPS

Blue Prints is a student run newspaper at Middletown High School and has been for over a decade.Blue Prints is a Gold Medallist winner from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The newspaper, run entirely by students, is funded through local advertisers. According to the Middletown public schools website "it  is a traditional newspaper to inform, entertain, and serve as open forum for student/community opinion."

Are there still not enough ways to find out MPS news?
It was run for years by teacher Jim Bransfield during his tenure at Middletown High. Bransfield also was a featured sports writer for the Middletown Press and celebrated announcer at Palmer Field for many years. Bransfield, now retired from being a high school politics teacher, is  now a para-educator at the Board of Education. Patch a subsidiary of AOL-Time Warner run by editor and veteran journalist Cassandra Day. Patch features blog articles by guest writers and some paid staff bloggers. The Insider find the Patch of the most unbias media publications in Middletown, and a refreshing alternative to other blogs and papers.
Is there really anyone against education?
In the past few weeks, various feel good articles touting Middletown Public Schools many activities and accomplishments have popped up on Patch written by Bransfield. See an example here: http://middletown-ct.patch.com/announcements/mhs-dance-team-wins-state-title-again The writing quality of Bransfield is unquestionably superb, we at the Insider recognize that, hear- but is this expense needed? The BOE is paying to toot it's own horn.

However, the question is why are these not being written by students such as those writing for Blue Prints? The board of education is paying a professional writer, who happens to be Bransfield, to write these press releases and attend the events. Is this a  necessary communication tool to the community?

Each school principal produces a parent newsletter available on the Middletown Public Schools website of good things happening at each school on a monthly basis, so why not use this information?

Is the BOE really spending taxpayer money wisely paying a professional writer to produce propoganda? If it is for the children, how does this help their education when it seems an opportunity to have students write being squandered?

Price of school lunches to increase at all Middletown public schools.

Don't forget this: The Mess this week published an article about superintendent salaries in Middletown and the rest of CT. However, the Insider came up with different numbers than what the Mess claimed, their article did not take into account stipends and exponential increases. The article claims Middletown's superintendent is 6th highest paid in state, yet is relatively comparable to what other superintendents of districts similar in size earn.

Last month the Insider published the Superintendent's contract
 ( here) .
The legalese is not always easy to understand; so we have broken it down below and done the yearly percentage increases:

For 2012/13 Charles will receive:   Base Salary $187,000 + $15,000 to her retirement fund, $3,000 bonus for having a doctorate degree + $6,500 for mileage = $211,500.00 for the year
For 2013/14 Charles will receive:  Base Salary a minimum of $191,675 + $19,168 to her retirement fund,  + $3,000 for having a doctorate degree + ,$6,500 for mileage = $220,343 for the year
For  2014/15 Charles will receive: Base salary a minimum of $196,467 + $19,648 to her retirement fund, $3,000 for having a doctorate degree and $6,500 for mileage = $225,615 for the year.

The superintendent also receives an increase anytime a principal gets a raise as to maintain the salary spacing.

Mayor: Safety Message via Honeywell Alert

This weekend, we held a joint meeting with the mayor’s office, Middletown Public Schools’ central office administration and Middletown Police Department command staff to review and improve our existing plans to secure our children’s welfare and safety.

We reviewed our existing emergency response protocols in light of the heartbreaking tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School and made additional plans to increase security at each of our schools. Some changes will be visible and some will not.

Students, parents, faculty and staff will witness an increased police presence in and around Middletown’s schools in the coming weeks. We have also formulated additional plans for increased police presence in and around Middletown’s schools on a permanent basis. Additionally, a number of other security measures are being implemented.

Our top priority is to provide our students, their families, our staff, and our community with a safe learning environment.

The tragedy suffered in Newtown puts into perspective the preciousness of our loved ones and that we must never take for granted their presence. We mourn for the children who were taken in the dawn of their lives, the families whose unimaginable grief can never be assuaged, and the community whose heart will bear enduring scars.

We can only hope and pray that they find comfort in the memories of those they have lost and in their spirit of unity. We invite you to join us for a vigil on the South Green Monday at 7 p.m., in memory of the people who lost their lives.

Sincerely,

Mayor Daniel Drew
Superintendent Patricia Charles
Police Chief William McKenna
