Jazz Up Close featuring Steve Wilson, saxophone

Saturday, September 10 1:30pm  Hubbard Room  Resonant Motion, Inc. presents alto and soprano saxophonist Steve Wilson in a trio with bassist Henry Lugo and pianist/series curator Noah Baerman.   Mr. Wilson is an indispensable part of the New York City jazz scene, an important contributor to the bands of Chick Corea, Maria Schneider, Christian McBride, Buster Williams, Ralph Peterson and Dave Holland, and as a bandleader in a live recording from the fabled Village Vanguard with his quartet, Wilsonian Grain.  Mr. Wilson serves on the faculties of CCNY and the Juilliard School.   This program is made possible by the generosity of the Middletown Commission on the Arts.

Introduction to  Mindfulness Meditation

Tuesday, September 13 11am - 12pm  Meeting Room 2 David Chandler, M.S., in Integrative Health and Healing, will teach a one-hour workshop on mindfulness: focusing on the present moment and acceptance, without judgment. No previous experience is necessary.  All are welcome at this drop-in program; repeats on September 20.

The Caroline Doctorow Duo

Free concert: Saturday, September 24 1:30pm Original folk songs and a tribute to songwriters and performers of the '60s.

We Were There: Writing Your Military Experiences

Thursdays at 6:30pm September 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 Meeting Room 2  All Veterans, either active or retired, are encouraged to come and write about their experiences for their own benefit or to share with others.  Author Elisabeth Petry leads the workshop; facilitator and contact person at the library is Christy Billings.  (860) 347-2528 or cbilling@russell.lioninc.org.    This program is being sponsored with funds from The Friends of the Russell Library.

EXHIBITS

Middletown High School Murals Beginning in 2009, senior class art students have embarked each year on a long term group project: producing a mural for the new school's corridors that would serve as a legacy to their graduating class.  The Class of 2016 mural and the recently completed Class of 2014 mural will be shown in the library's main lobby through the end of September. Both were completed under the guidance of art teacher Patrick Shugrue.  Opening September 16 Community Partners in Action: Prison Arts Program On the walls: OUT OF PRISON MAKING ART / Recent Artwork From Former Prisoners Sixth annual "alumni" exhibition - featuring the work of artists who have been out of prison for over a decade as well as recently released artists. Materials and media vary widely: including paint, pencil and welded steel... In the case: RECENT SCULPTURE / Created In Prison During the Past Year In prison, scraps of anything can find their way into ingenious sculptural works...come see a few of the best made in the past year!

Tuesday, September 13  6 - 8pm Hubbard Room Orville Pierson will discuss how job hunters can use a systematic, professional approach to their job search.

Free Resume Reviewing

Learn how potential employers filter and determine which prospective candidates move on to interviews. The  Library offers confidential resume critiquing and in-depth interview coaching appointments several times each month with certified resume writers.    Call (860) 347-2520 to sign up for a 60 minute appointment.   If you need to cancel, please allow 48 hours notice. These services are funded by generous support from the Friends of the Russell Library and a Community Development Block Grant from the City of Middletown.

Career Coaching

Associate Director of the Wesleyan Career Center, James Kubat, gives private, confidential career coaching through appointments at Russell Library. Please bring a resume (if you have one) to the appointment. You must register and/or cancel at the Information Desk or by calling (860) 347-2520. You will receive a reminder call prior to the appointment.

Practice Job Interviews

Improve your interviewing skills and get the job you want. Bob Carlson will assist you by conducting and evaluating your practice interview, either by phone  or at Russell Library.
