"FROM BEHIND BARS" - A Series, Part 4

Photo - CNN
This is the fourth in a series of letters written by someone who is currently in the custody of the Connecticut Department of Corrections.  (Links to previous letters are at the bottom of the page.)

Most of us likely don't know anyone who is incarcerated, much less do we correspond with someone who is.

These letters are being submitted anonymously and have been, and will be, redacted to protect the privacy of the writer and the writer's family and friends.

After having examined the trial transcripts and speaking extensively to others who have first hand and intimate knowledge of the matter, I am of the opinion that this person is innocent of the crime for which he was convicted, his council being incompetent and ineffective.

Given that the reader has no knowledge of this person or the facts or circumstances surrounding this person's case, the editor asks that readers keep an open mind and take the letters at face value.  Because the purpose of publishing these letters is not to bring condemnation or ridicule to the parties affected, such comments will not be published.  Please keep comments civil.

  1. This place he is at has the overflow of mental patients, I assume from when they closed the state hospitals. Everyone is treated as though they are mental.

There are no programs or services for the inmates. They are in their cells 20 hours a day. That way they do not have to bother with them. The visiting room has a long table with glass running the full length and higher than your head when you sit down opposite him. You cannot hear what he says because of the glass and the roar of the other visitors.

In the little time he is out of his cell he has been exercising and is looking good. The diet there creates a lot of overweight people so he is trying to stay on top of that. No pork or things the Muslims restrict from their diet.

Just some stuff to give you an idea what his environment is like. The part time medical staff has been cut to I guess it could be called quarter time. He is becoming quite an artist so he applies himself to that. Incredible.
