Letter to the Editor:Today is a sad and dark day in CT

Yesterday, lawmakers in the Connecticut legislature voted in favor of stricter gun laws and limits on so called assault weapons in response the killing  of 20 children and 6 educators at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012. The bill also included measures, although limited, to address mental health issues and violence as well as violence prevention measures in schools.
The full bill can be read in its original form here:

Christine Carta, Middletown wrote:"Nearly every post I have read today is from an outraged citizen. I find it curious that so many folks are outraged, yet our elected officials claim to vote their constituents' views. Doesn't add up."

Joanne Faust, Middletown,  "My feelings are this, which I'm not looking to start a whole political debate; however I'm tired of gun enthusiasts using/hiding behind the 2nd amendment. When the amendment was written, the founding fathers had muskets - not semi-automatic, rapid fire, and mass ammo clips!!! The average citizen should not be able to purchase and possess those types of fire arms and clips!!"

Angel Fernandez, Middletown, wrote “There is no such thing as clips Joanne maybe magazines...”

Jim Salemi, Middletown, wrote  “So the second amendment only protects musket owners, Joanne? Really? The founding fathers were concerned about the people's ability to defend themselves and their country against tyranny--including domestic tyranny. So you think the people can use muskets to defend themselves against a government armed with modern "rapid fire" weapons? Really? Wow. How much do we spend on public education a year? And I don"t hide behind anything, including the second amendment.

Enzo Faienza, Cromwell, ( also candidate for Mayor 2013 Cromwell) wrote: "Today is a sad day for our State, this is the beginning to the end. Today big government will infringe on our 2nd amendment rights. They will tell us this is it but it's only the beginning. The next phase will be to take our guns away completely. Bloomberg in NY is trying to tell people what they can eat and drink and before you know it that will happen here. Where is the end, day by day big progressive government is taking our rights away and before you know it we will be nothing but empty zombies. Wake up people and stand up for your rights or one day you will wake up and be just that, a ZOMBIE TO BIG GOVERNMENT WITH NO HEART AND NO SOUL!!!!!!"

Today is a sad and dark day in CT.  A tragedy that took 20 angels and 6 heroes at Sandy Hook has now become a tragedy for hundred of thousands of law abiding citizens.

CT is now the Unconstitutional State.

Much darker days are coming.

I pray for every resident in this state.

GOD HELP US  ALL!

  1. This is a fair and balanced approach to the problem of guns and gun violence. It's shocking that police officers are against gun control, since they so often are the victims of gun violence. Most chiefs of police around the country are strongly in favor of restricting gun rights.

  5. Bullshit - those who know nothing about guns do not understand how these bills work, and do not understand that they do not affect criminals at all, only regular citizens. The CT police chiefs association pushed hard for this bill, in the same fashion as they went into the capitol in 2010 and lobbied against bills designed to further protect our first and fourth amendment rights. The language in this bill bans almost all semi-auto rifles in the state; and confiscates guns over time as people move or die off; nothing about this bill is fair or balanced, though it may appear to be to someone who knows nothing about guns or understands the concept of natural rights.

  6. To Anonymous,

Right direction; if your goal is to get to hell, perhaps. Who says most police chiefs are in favor of restricting "gun rights"? What kool aid are you drinking? And even if that were true, "most" police chiefs are political appointees. Of course they are going to spout what ever their controllers tell them to. How about taking a look at what "most" sheriffs, who are elected officials, are saying.

  7. In response to Joanne Faust, of Middletown talking about the founding fathers had muskets - not semi-automatic, rapid fire, and mass ammo clips!!! I give you this food for thought -- To defend yourself from whoever you have to be at least as well armed as they are.

A entity wanting to attack us would love for us to just be armed with muskets!

  9. Blood on our hands...

As I reflect on the past few months regarding the tragedy at Sandy Hook, I wonder who has blood on their hands? Is it the NRA? Is it the Gun? Is it the police or legislation or heaven forbid the human? Who actually has blood on their hands? It is crystal clear to me that it is in fact I, You, We that do, we as citizens, we as a society and we as parents have blood on our hands, we are to blame for the death's of our most innocent our most defenseless our children. We dismiss reality and our children perish, we ignore truth and our children perish, we insist an object has evolved into a state of consciousnesses and no longer requires a human to determine its path and our children perish, is this what we believe reality is? The unwillingness to face truth the dismissal of fact is this our new reality? We claim to be the most intelligent being on earth but in reality we are far from it. Common sense? We have none and our children perish. I ask you,how can our children dream of being the president some day or a fireman a doctor or just a member of society when they are dead? I say to you the HUMAN has changed for the human is the most destructive weapon on the planet and If we are to conquer this evil, this disregard for life, these senseless slayings of the innocent and defenseless, it is of the utmost importance we put aside politics and agendas, we must face the truth, we must embrace reality we must address the root, the HUMAN. I say to you until we as humans face this truth this reality I, You, We will always have blood on our hands. Connecticut we have missed the mark, we have veered off course and our children will continue to perish.

  10. If the new law prevents even one death it is well worth it

  12. The new gun control laws are an obscene violation of our rights Our politicians and anti-gun activists have been waiting for the right moment to push their agenda, and didn't even wait 24 hours after the tragedy in Newtown to push their agenda. It has nothing to do with preventing another Newtown and everything to do with punishing and burdening law abiding gun owners to cut down on the number of people willing to jump through the hoops and legally exercise their 2nd Amendment rights. How would the left feel if these types of restrictions were placed on voting?

  14. This bill, was pushed through, changed in the dead of night, with little time for our lawmakers to read, digest or understand it's Constitutional over reach. For that, I am thankful, this puddle of drivel doesn't stand a snowballs chance of holding up to the light of public scrutiny.
To those that say gun owners 'hide behind' the 2nd amendment, I can only say this: I stand in front of it, in full view. I am not alone, and you may not like what I have to say, but my position, is what protects your ability to run your mouth.

  15. To those that say 2nd Amendment was written when they only had muskets only proves they are ignorant and uneducated, never learning any real history. Lewis and Clark succeeded in exploring the entire country west of the Mississippi thanks to a semi-auto rifle called the Girandoni Rifle (inv. 1779), which fired 22 bullets per pull of the trigger. How do you think a band of 33 people were able to cross into hostile Indian territory and escape unharmed? Because they showcased the technology in front of the tribes and amazed them at "unlimited" bullets out of a fire stick. They never did tell the Indians how many bullets were in the rifle.

Also... by your own lack of logic, you shouldnt have free speech on the radio, TV, or internet or with bullhorns at protests because they only had newspapers and their natural voices for speech when the Constitution was written.

See, the problem with you left wingers is that you ignore the fact our Founding Fathers were BRILLIANT, and they were also scientists, and they KNEW to word the Constitution with protection of technology. Read the Federalist Papers and educate yourself.

  16. I think Thomas Jefferson said it best: "Tyranny is defined as that which is legal for the government but illegal for the citizenry."
