CTGOP Demands the CT Dems Begin to Stand up for the Hardworking Connecticut Taxpayers

This afternoon, (Thurs. June 22nd) Connecticut Republican Party Chairman J.R. Romano issued the following statement regarding newly discovered information regarding current and former members of the Connecticut Congressional Delegation using the state health coverage plan instead of the federal health coverage:

“What we learned today from the discovery of the five current and former members of the Connecticut Congressional Delegation is disgusting.  Instead of fixing a broken system, they took advantage of it.  The Connecticut Congressional Delegation opted for a more generous state health plan over the promoted federal coverage is just another example of how Washington insiders are out of the touch with the hard working tax payers of our state.”

An article by Jon Lender details how Sen. Richard Blumenthal, former Sen. Joseph Lieberman, U.S. Rep. John Larson, and former U.S. Reps. Rob Simmons and Chris Shays opt for a more generous state health plan instead of federal health coverage.

“While Connecticut has a $19 billion unfunded health care liability, families are struggling to absorb the rising costs of living and increased taxes: Sen. Richard Blumenthal, former Sen. Joseph Lieberman, U.S. Rep. John Larson, and former U.S. Reps. Rob Simmons and Chris Shays instead footed the bill to the taxpayers” continued Romano
“It is obscene that one of the richest member of the U.S. Senate who has been a member of the Veterans Committee, received favorable treatment while veterans suffered with the scandals of the V.A. during the Obama administration.  Sen. Blumenthal should be ashamed of himself."

“The Connecticut Democratic Party claims to be the party for working families, but instead their elected officials choose health plans of self-enrichment, and Kevin Lembo should apologize for not bringing this to the attention of the public.  Kevin Lembo as State comptroller is supposed to be the financial steward for all of our residents and should apologize to the families of Connecticut for his gross negligence.”

Excerpt from the Hartford Courant
“This information is emerging now because Tim Herbst, a candidate for next year's Republican gubernatorial nomination, requested health coverage information on Shays and the others from the state comptroller. He gave the information to Government Watch, which got through to four out of the five congressional veterans on the phone — all but Lieberman, who did not return a call to his New York law office.”
“The subject of state employee/retiree health benefits is at the center of an urgent discussion at the state Capitol of how to extricate Connecticut from a budget crisis that may be its worst ever.”
“Herbst said he obtained the information on the five federal officials' benefits to make the point that "we are giving out health care that is better than what members of Congress receive at a time when the state is broke."
