Letter to the Editor: The Shaw Resolution Right for Middletown

Letter to the Editor by William Boylan:
Middletown should adopt the Shaw Resolution.

3/5/2013 Editors' Note: The resolution below was forwarded to the Insider from reader William Boylan,  original author is Alan Shaw. Our apologies for the confusion. Thank you Mr. Boylan and Palin Smith for submission.
THE SHAW RESOLUTION by Alan Shaw

Whereas the Declaration of Independence, issued in 1776, speaks of certain unalienable rights which are endowed on men by their creator,

And whereas the Declaration of Independence was in direct response to the abuses of the British government towards the colonies and the colonists of North America, including the 1774 ban on the importation of firearms and gunpowder and the 1775 violent confiscations of firearms and gunpowder,

And Whereas the United States Constitution contains a section comprising the first tem amendments, commonly referred to as the Bill of Rights,

And whereas the second of those amendments states in part that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,

And Whereas the Supreme Court of the United States in the 1876 case of U.S. v. Cruikshank recognized the rights mentioned in the first and second amendments were not granted by the Constitution but existed prior to the Constitution,

And whereas the Supreme Court of the United States in both the 2008 case of District of Columbia v. Heller and the 2010 case of McDonald vs. Chicago that the second amendment protected an individual right to possess a firearm for traditionally lawful purposes such as self defense,

And whereas recent events in our state have caused many elected officials on national, state and local levels to find it politically expedient to speak out against the unalienable rights of free citizens in the name of political correctness, including seeking to pass legislation which would infringe upon those rights,

Be it resolved that the Stamford Republican Town Committee recognizes and supports the right of the people to keep and bear arms as protected by the second amendment of the United States Constitution.

Be it further resolved that the Stamford Republican Town Committee recognizes that elected officials must represent all citizens but find that we cannot support those politicians even from our own political party, who criticize, or seek to infringe upon or otherwise control the rights of the people they were elected to serve.
