Councilwoman: 30 min to Vet Deputy Ample Time

Councilman Serra & Mayor Drew
Today the Hartford Cournat quoted Councilwoman Hope Kasper regarding the vetting of candidate for deputy police chief Michael Timbro. Kasper remarks were in regards to Councilwoman Kleckowski's allegation of due process in notifying Personnel Committee members not being followed.
"I know it was short notice but there were alternatives [to leaving the meeting]," Kasper said. "If she didn't have the opportunity to pick up the information before the meeting she could have asked for maybe a 30 minute recess to read the materials. I feel very strongly that this needs to move ahead for the police department." As quoted in the article by the Courant here: http://www.courant.com/community/middletown/hc-middletown-deputy-chief-0112-20130111,0,1827905.story
Apparently, taking 30 minutes to vet a candidate for the second most important position regarding public safety is more than enough time for speed reader Councilwoman Hope Kasper. Scary.  I guess when you are Kasper, on personnel committees in which you hire your own son-in-law as she did in the case of Josh Berger,  it wouldn't  take 30 min to fairly evaluate someone's whole career!

Earlier in the week, Kleckowski was screamed at by an angry Mayor Drew after she questioned the timing of the meeting  with little notice of the materials needed to vet the candidates.  Read about Mayor Drew loosing his cool here.

Last year, Councilman Bob Santangelo was caught on video having a melt-down directed  at fellow council persons and members of the public who came to a public safety meeting taking place there.

The issue at hand and continues to be with this Mayor and the Democratic majority is that the minority party, and the public, are purposely kept out of the loop. The requirement is the the process for delivery of official documents, whatever it is, be fair. In this case, delivery of the record in such a manner or at such a time as to render it meaningless would violate  due process. Giving information to the Democratic majority before others is also a violation. Of course the laws don't apply in Middletown!

  1. Sorry but Kleckowski's grandstanding not getting sympathy. If she is unable to do her job she should quit. And to think she fancies herself fit for higher office when she can't think on her feet.

  2. HOw is Debbie the problem? Drew yells and screams and then tries to stonewall a member of the Council.. Drew is not their BOSS!! Imagine if Seb Garofalo yelled at a Democrat? Imagine if Juliano yelled at Daley, Viktoria SUNNNYQUVISTSASFSTEIN would be all over that link it to the story of the day!

  3. Hope is the only one in this showing any class and grace. Kleckowski isn't fooling anyone with her Middletown version of the fillibuster, and in the end she is going to vote against anything Dan Drew submits and everyone can see through her. The baby mayor behaved poorly and should not have thrown a fit in public like he did.

Hope you should put both of them in time out. You go girl!

  4. Hope is Middletown's answer to Nancy Reagan, she looks for her intel from the stars and other out of this world sources.

  5. Has all civility in politics disappeared? Councilwoman Kleckowski had every right to request additional time to review the documents presented and her request should have been granted. Mayor Drew needs to be reminded that he is a statesman representing the people of Middletown and should behave as such regardless of his level of frustration.

  8. I use to think Dan was a nice guy, who could think on his own and stand up for the little people. But he has no heart for the people and I see now he is all for himself. He has no guts to stand up to the puppet master Serra. I think the mayor should look long and hard in the mirror and stop letting himself see only what everyone else wants him to see. Elections are about 9 months away.......

    I'm voted for Drew....never again.

  9. It should be remembered that Ms. Kasper also let the same meeting that Mr. Santangelo left.

Also, the PRC was scheduled to meet on Tuesday, there was a Community Common Council meeting on Wednesday or Thursday however that agenda was already set; unless there had been a plan to amend the agenda to add the confirmation of the appointment to that meeting. The regular Common Council meeting is scheduled for the first Monday in the month of February; certainly enough time before to schedule a special meeting of PRC to perform the proper due diligence in regards to this candidate.

  13. What is the big deal about cronyism in MIddletown? I bet it happens all the time in other town and walks of life. I do have an issue with changing the job description especially if they make the qualifications to get 'their' own people in.

  14. Just because it happens doesn't make it right especially when a more qualified officer applied. Government should be the model for private personnel rules.
