John Ratzenberger's Meriden Trip in Pictures

Meriden-   On September 29, 2012 acclaimed film and television actor, John Razenberger, known to most folks at the know-it-all postman on NBC’s long running hit program Cheers, appeared at a rally at Meriden’s Four Points Hotel in order to support State Senator Len Suzio who is running for his second term in the General Assembly.  Ratzenberger, a Bridgeport native, is a huge supporter of keeping manufacturers in America and currently hosts a program on the Travel Channel entitled John Ratzenberger’s Made in America, a show that features segments on businesses such as Zippo, Jack Daniels, Louisville Slugger, Gatorade and others notable companies that maintain factories and employees in America.   During his brief speech in front of nearly 200 fans, Ratzenberger stressed the importance of keeping business in “America and for Americans.”  He also praised Suzio’s efforts in his attempts to keep a cap on Connecticut’s gas tax as well as his work with regard to repealing Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s Early Release for Violent Offenders Law suspended.

Guest Blog: A Review of 2016 Movie

"2016" --- Movie ReviewBy Tim D. Enchanter
Let me preface this by saying that I value Truth and loathe Lies … always have … always
will. Regardless of my political and ideological leanings (which will not be discussed today),
I believe there is never a good excuse to lie about your political opponent. Whether the
subject is Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, or Barack Obama, my feelings are the same.
There is no need to lie when you have truth on your side and can present your ideas logically,
rationally, calmly and explain them in ways everyone can understand.
That is why I liked the movie, 2016 by Dinesh D’Souza. He is an academic professional
who researches the truth and postulates his theory without lies or malice. If you are
expecting a hit piece which will tell you what a horrible person President Obama is, then you
will be sorely disappointed. There is nothing insulting or slanderous presented, regardless of
what some avid Obama supporters may think.
For example, the interview with the President’s brother in Kenya does not show anyone
saying anything nasty about Barack Obama either Junior or Senior. In fact, contrary to Rush
Limbaugh’s idea of the President not helping his brother, said brother does not want a single
thing. He holds no bad feelings and proudly says that the President of the United States has
greater things to deal with and should not waste time taking care of a brother who needs no
help. That singular moment struck me because I was expecting some character bashing. Talk
to each of my two brothers and you may hear about two different people, each of them being
me.

Suzio calls out Governor Malloy on Tax Hikes

Press Release
Re: Governor Malloy won’t rule out tax hikes.

Senator Len Suzio pledges to oppose all tax hikes when the State Senate reconvenes in January.

At a press conference on Sept 24 Governor Malloy opened the door to tax hikes to help balance the budget for 2013-2014.

"I will be working morning noon and night to slam the door on any tax hikes. Our state's hard pressed taxpayers need an unequivocal commitment that additional tax increases will not be used to balance next year's budget. There is no alternative but to balance the budget the way ordinary Connecticut families balance their budgets - by cutting back expenses to
match revenues. We need to balance the budget the 'old-fashion way' - with responsible budgets that reduce wasteful spending"
, Senator Suzio commented.

"Connecticut taxpayers need and want a firm commitment to hold the line on tax increases
and spending. The days of increasing taxes to make up for budget mistakes are over. I am
pledged to voting against any tax increase as a budget balancing option next year. Every
candidate should make the same pledge to voters this Fall", Senator Suzio concluded.

Photo  & commentary below is a Middletown Insider creation, not part of the official Suzio Press Release above. What does Dannel like to use tax revenue for? Trips to China of course! The Insider has discovered Mayor Drew was not chosen by his BFF Governor Malloy to go to China as a delegate, he applied and begged to join the delegation.Pretty lame to invite folks, but make them fork over the cash to go, in this case taxpayers funded the trip for both. Still no report  from Mayor Dan/Lisa as promised to the Common Council six months ago....

Letter to the Editor: Haunting Past of Future Deputy & New Chief of MPD

A reader has sent us the following past news articles regarding the history of Mayor Dan/Lisa's appointment of Officer McKenna to police chief and  the rumored  future appointment of current Captain Michael Timbro to Deputy Chief.  Mayor Drew recently suggested changes to the personnel job criteria to allow for an internal hire. Although the staff of the Insider has not formed an opinion of these appointments, and remains open minded; we offer the following article excerpts submitted by a reader posted for discussion purposes, and consideration by other readers. The Insider staff has received multiple letters and questions regarding the police chief/deputy situation and are aware this is of great concern to our readers. All  authors  of these letters have expressed the same fear of retaliation if public concern is raised; therefore, for their protection, we will not name any of our sources should they choose to come forward and seek our help.

The articles outline the relationship between Councilman and then Mayor Tom Serra ( a former Vinal Tech principal) and the officers, as well as the officers' pasts. Our source points out, which is evident in the news articles cited below, the Serracrat regime has changed the hiring criteria for police officers once before, to benefit officers McKenna and Timbro.

Readers following the police department situation may also be interested in our previous post outlining how wife of an officer voted to make personnel changes in thedepartment:http://www.middletowninsider.com/2012/09/something-about-mary-wife-of-cop-votes.html
 ---------------------------------------------------
From the Hartford Courant, 11/5/05

"Hertler and Morron allege that Thornton, Brymer and Pessina took the side of Timbro following a December 2003 confrontation between the sergeant and the two officers. Timbro was returning home with his family that day when he was stopped at an emergency roadblock where Hertler and Morron were working. Police reports say Timbro was upset because he was denied access.

Hertler, Morron and other witnesses at the scene said Timbro became enraged and ran the roadblock. The officers filed a complaint against Timbro. When they failed to get a response from the police administration, the officers complained to city hall.

The confrontation eventually became the focus of a criminal probe, although Timbro was never charged. He was suspended for three days after an internal police investigation."

 -----------------------------------------------------------

From the Hartford Courant, 4/6/1995

"Mayor Thomas J. Serra on Wednesday defended his hiring of three new city police officers, even though all of them failed to make a recommended hiring list provided by the police department after extensive background checks.

``They met the criteria and they all come from good, decent, long-standing Middletown families,'' Serra said. ``I am a residency person, and they met the qualifications.''

Serra's decision to hire the officers, despite the advice of police professionals, has prompted former political rival Maria Madsen Holzberg to call for sweeping reforms in the city's personnel policies and the mayor's hiring power.

An Army of None
Guest blog below by Tim D. Enchanter

“I am tired of having to choose between the Lesser of Two Evils so I’m staying home.”
“I’m not voting until my party gives me someone I can vote for instead of against.”
“Political Parties are not constitutional so voting violates the Constitution.”
“The President is Illegitimate so voting with him on the ballot is Illegal.”
Does anyone else remember this “illegitimate” argument being used against Bush … or against Clinton?       Was either of them re-elected?  If you do not know the answer to that last question, then stop reading and go back to sleep.
It astonishes me when some try to convince me and others to stay home and not vote in order to teach “The Establishment” a lesson.  It does teach them a lesson.  It teaches them that they can get you to stay home and not vote so that they will not have to deal with you.
Let me explain this as simply as possible to all the brain donors out there who think that not voting gives you some sort of political power.
A vote not cast does not count.
The fewer people who vote, the more each vote counts because by not voting you give your vote to those who do vote.
The so-called “Establishment” will never say this but they actually love low voter turnout.

Letter to the Editor: Where is the Transparency at the BOE?

Letter to the Editor:
This is a letter in response to the comments by Board of Education member Ed Mckeon left on his blog post on the Middletown Eye " Living in a No Paper Town, Part II." Mckeon responded to anonymous comments asking about his role on the BOE and transparency asking anyone concerned with transparency to sign his or her name for him to answer.
I will use my name as I have no issue using it,
What I would like to know is: Where is the transparency when it comes to the BOE budget? I think it should be a detailed line item budget like every other department in the city. What do we get? A one line budget with no details. That is one issue you Ed specifically, and others, highlighted in your campaign a year ago; yet I see the same old thing as I saw before. The budget is clouded in mystery. While improvements have been made as far as more committees regarding curriculum, the people of Middletown still don't know what is going on within in the BOE as far as where our tax money is being spent dollar for dollar like in all other departments. This is not a partisan issue, but it does take a majority to make it happen.

Signed
William Wilson

Something About Mary: Wife of Cop Votes on Personnel Changes for Cops

Something about Councilwoman
Mary Bartolotta (D) is that she doesn't
understand a conflict of interest when
a potential one is staring her in the face.
Taking a play from Councilwoman  Hope Kasper (D)- who got her son in law a pretty sweet deal over at the Board of Education as an illegally hired administrator with teacher benefits (read more here), Coucilwoman Mary Bartolotta (D) decided it was a-okay to vote for altered language in the qualifications for deputy police chief as part of the 3 councilperson Personnel Review Committee, despite the fact her husband is a police officer on the force. By voting, Bartolotta is setting up for a huge conflict, whether her husband is pursuing this position or not, one of his colleagues is.
All police are on the same force and by that definition in some capacity work together. There is a great deal of trust officers must have for one another after all they are responsible at times for each others lives. Being distantly related with someone vs having a spouse's paycheck, work duty assignments, overtime, etc. related to a position of authority that one us voting on is far different.
Plenty of people who work for the city or hold elected positions are related and there is little to no conflict; we are pointing out a husband wife relationship is far different, and a relationships between officers are far different than that of typical office colleagues by far. Any question of possible strife that could arise from a conflict, even perceived that could jeopardize that relationship is point we were making .The Insider is far from alleging any bad cops here, but we ask: Could  sergeant  under a deputy that was chosen as having qualifications his wife shaped could have negative results? Favortism or lose of trust by other officers?
We hope not, but the conflict is still a possibility.

The Courant published an article earlier in the week explaining Mayor Drew's "reasons"  for changing qualifications to exclude the need for any college experience, and the substitution of work experience. Earlier this year, Drew hired his unqualified neighbor as a favor for a dispatch position, the hire soon tanked. Let's cross our fingers Dano can be a better judge of  qualifications this time and puts personal feelings aside. If he can't Lisa Santangelo you can bet will have a say! Hopefully, these changes are in good faith to allow a qualified internal hire, and are not being tailored to only to fit someone who the Serracrats owe a favor to.
The only brave soul YET AGAIN, was Councilwoman (and Candidate for the 100th District) Deborah Kleckowski (R) who questioned the conflict of interest on the Council floor,  which yet was again was refuted by the Democrats on the council.
Should Bartolotta have voted?

DeLauro Must Stop Dodging

For Immediate Release

DeLauro Must Stop Dodging
NAUGATUCK, CONN – September 18: Wayne Winsley, committed to effectively represent all the people of Connecticut’s 3rd U.S. Congressional District and to restore the Public Trust, today released the following statement:

“Incumbent Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, in a recent statement caught on videotape says she, “hasn’t heard from Wayne.” regarding any candidate forums or debates.  That is not accurate.

The truth is we have invited incumbent DeLauro to several open forums held throughout the 3rd Congressional District.  Our campaign Media Releases are sent directly to the DeLauro campaign.  But, there is more.  For example:

Prior to the public forum held on August 9th at the East Haven Senior Center, on August 8th, an enterprising media professional took the initiative to contact the DeLauro campaign and published the following statement that the  incumbent “Congresswoman DeLauro’s staff says she will not be attending this candidate forum”.  Obviously, the DeLauro campaign has been aware of the forums.  Equally obvious, either Ms. DeLauro is out of touch with her staff - as increasingly is the case with citizens in the 3rd CD – or disorganization is the case at the campaign’s HQ.

It is time for incumbent DeLauro to stop dodging and join me with the citizens of the 3rd CD in public forums.

The people deserve the opportunity to hold incumbent DeLauro accountable for her two decades in office and to hold Wayne Winsley accountable for what he commits to do as their next U.S. Congressional Representative.

To speak directly with Wayne Winsley, schedule a media interview, or to schedule a visit with your group, organization or association, contact him directly by phone at860-248-0324 or via email wayne@winsleyforcongress.org .

Guest Video: "What We have here is a failure to Communicate"

Video by Palin Smith, who describes himself as "a videographer of the tea party movement in Connecticut. He is always ready to capture the image of a politician, a train wreck or a plague, but that's being redundant!"

Video tag by Smith: Last week, in New Haven, Representative Rosa DeLauro (3rd District) a 22-year incumbent Democrat was asked if she planned to debate her Republican challenger, Wayne Winsley. Listen for yourself to her reply and then listen to Wayne Winsley from two weeks ago. Is it a case of "what we got here is failure to communicate", or is this a case of ignorance by design?

Portrait of a Typical Middletown Resident : Man Who Cares

The Man Who Cares.

In 2011 Ben Florsheim 14', president of the WesDems, President of the CT College Democrats & Middletown Democratic Town Committee member helped then Mayoral Candidate Dan Drew rally, register, and transport over 400+ Wesleyan students to vote in the municipal city wide election.
High student turn out is expected for the presidential and state level district elections in this November.
Anyone wishing to vote, students & city citizens alike can, are encouraged to get information about voter registration from the Office of the Registrar of Voters at City Hall downtown.

The point here is this: By supreme court order students are allowed to vote in their college town. The staff of the Insider encourages everyone to vote.
If you as a full time resident disagree with who some one like Ben Florsheim chooses to put in office of  Mayor, BOE member etc, then make sure YOU and everyone you know votes in this year's election for president & state representatives! Where are the student's now ? Will they demand the "transparency" parents  demanded from the BOE for example?

"Tom Florsheim said Weyco is subject to the same headwinds many companies selling retail goods face today, such as the slow economy in the U.S., increases in material prices and rising labor costs in Asia, where most of its shoes are made. But he’s upbeat on the future." Original article here

The billion dollar company is sponsoring a generous contest to help the  less fortunate.

Can you say the ONE PERCENT with the wealth?

Wait a minute people!  Can you say: Shoe Company Heir + 193 Million Dollar Senator?  I bet you can.. They are all Democrats, so with all that moola would that qualify them as part of the 1% of the people with the wealth.  Right, it's okay they're Democrats, they can do what they want and not as they preach..

"It wasn’t “fun” work but looking back he thought it was good to do a little manual labor in addition to the unpaid political stuff.  It built character– not that I’ll jump at the opportunity to work in a warehouse again anytime soon,” stated Ben."

The Insider is looking for any funny captions for this amazing protest photo. Leave them in the comments section. First prize, a brand new set of saddle shoes. Second Prize, forget about it, you're not part of the one percent.

WesDems held their first meeting of the year this evening, Wesleyan Drop-Out turned Anti-Term Limit & Future Career Politician Rep. Matt Lesser (District 100) was on hand to give remarks and inspire. Readers should check Wesleying blog website to stay tuned to whats happening on campus and how the WesDems plan to contribute to our local political elections.
Speaking of local elections, remember how last year the "non partisan group" Democracy Now of Wesleyan  invited Candidate Drew to speak on campus, and not incumbent Giuliano, and it was "coincidence" how it happened to fall right at election time? And remember how then after MRTC members showed up at the public lecture uninvited, yet behaved, and then writers affiliated with the  WesDems tried to counter attack and claim the group was disruptive?
Seems Mayor Drew is making another "coincidental" & totally "non partisan" appearance as guest speaker at  the public First Year Anniversary Party of the Young Leaders Society branch of the Middlesex United Way  on 10/11/2012 at 7pm at the Shadow Room Bar & Lounge on Main Street. Let's hope this PUBLIC event is non partisan because that 501 3c non profit IRS status is a terrible thing to jeopardize for a group just for one's own  politicking. Take a lesson from Red Rosa  Dano and read our article!

Guest Blog: Loitering Wars Update by Fred Carroll

Last month the Insider was privileged to get a guest blog by Fred Carroll on his take on the " Loitering Wars" he has observed taking place in Middletown. The original post is below with background information. Thank you Fred!

http://www.middletowninsider.com/2012/08/guest-blog-loitering-wars-of-middletown.html

Below is Carroll's update in his own words:

Loitering Wars Update by Fred Carroll.....I walked into the five dollar cupcake place the other day and whilst ordering an Irish Car Bomb I inquired as to whether they ever considered naming a cupcake a Mexican Standoff in honor of the ongoing Loitering War scrum, which is currently in a "cold" state, or, "Mexican standoff". They hadn't considered it. Alright, cuteness thus dispatched, I'd like to say a few words about the history and background of loitering and loitering laws. In the good ole' Puritan times if you wanted to chill under a tree for a bit, you were well advised to pick an apple tree and bring a basket along for an alibi in case one of the brethren should see you "idling", as in "the Sin of Idleness". In more recent times anti loitering law has been used very effectively to circumnavigate Abolition; that is as a legal predication for rounding up Black men and throwing them on Cool Hand Luke style chain gangs and such.....all of which has absolutely nothing to do with Middletown's current "loitering problem", which at it's core is very simply a Quality Of Life issue - that is to say chronically dysfunctional people doing their dysfunctional business every day, all day, every night, all night. Salient to said dysfunctional "business" are drug dealing, prostitution, begging, and just generally being miserable as a result of the unfair hand dealt one by Life itself .....Said dysfunctional business is carried on without any regard whatsoever for anyone else who might also want to do business in the area, even when it's just someone else wanting to do some good old fashioned, honest loitering! Like me for instance, I don't dare get in the way of The Dysfunctional One's business, oh no, you don't want "interfere" with a drug deal, Heaven forbid! So when do I get to loiter, huh? And who do I complain to in the meantime?

January 3 2007! Read and Think

An Alternate History Lesson by: Robbie Sipangelo

A history lesson you will not find in the news, weather TV or
Print. You won’t find it in our schools  either.

Do YOU REMEMBER JANUARY 3, 2007?

This is NOT a political message, but rather a clarification to remind us all of the correct facts.

Remember that on October 9, 2007, 11 months before our “economic crisis” occurred
(that was actually created), the Dow hit its highest point ever, closing at 14,164.53 and reaching 14,198.10 intra-day level 2 days later.  Unemployment was steady at 4.7%.  But things were already being put in place to create the havoc we’ve all been experiencing since then.  And it all started, as this email explains, on January 3, 2007.  --LFL

This tells the  story, why Bush was so “bad” at the end of his term. Don't just skim over this, it's not very long, read it slowly and let it sink in. If in doubt, check it out!!!

The day the Democrats took over was not January 22nd 2009; it was actually January 3rd 2007, which was the day the Democrats took over the House of Representatives and the Senate, at the very start of the 110th Congress.

The Democrat Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the first time since
the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995.

For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy that everything is
"Bush's Fault", think about this: January 3rd, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress.

At the time:
The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77 The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5% The Unemployment rate was 4.6% George Bush's Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB GROWTH

Remember the day...
January 3rd, 2007was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee.  The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy?  BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!

Unemployment... to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mac and Freddie Mac FIASCOES!

Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie - starting in 2001 because it was financially risky for the US economy.

And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA
And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie? OBAMA and the Democrat Congress.

So when someone  tries to blame Bush.  REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd,
 2007....

Who is Really Running City Hall?

Who is really running City Hall? If you guessed old guard Councilman Tom Serra and big brother Rep. Joe Serra you are wrong! Although they still hold the reins tight for the in-debt  Water Department run under the leadership of Serra first cousin Director Guy Russo, it appears the grip on Mayor Drew's collar maybe loosening. Move over boys, a new person has taken the throne and SHE isn't going anywhere fast. And nope - not Nepotism Nelly Councilwoman Hope Kasper - , guess again...
A staff meeting took place on Tuesday September 11 which was meant to discuss issues with how the Registrar of Voters Office is running and its relationship with the Town Clerks Office. Several City employees have expressed concern to Mayor Drew and Administrative Assistant Joe Samolis regarding unprofessional behavior of Deputy Democratic Registrar of Voters appointee and former Democratic Town Chair Lisa Santangelo. Our sources say the only thing the meeting produced was that Lisa Santangelo played on her cell phone the entire meeting while the mayor was speaking to everyone. Before issues where even brought up about Santangelo's behavior and bullying, the Mayor Drew said "This wasn't going to be a meeting where everyone can pile blame on one person." Those  who had privately brought issues with Lisa Santangelo and her unprofessional, combative attitude were immediately shut down and essentially told nothing would be done. City employees have told us Santangelo has even taken a liking to wandering around the building into other offices that have no relationship with the Registrar's office, and  then offers unsolicited advice to employees and directors how to do their jobs- ie her way!

Letter to the Editor: Ben Florsheim, Chair of Wesleyan College Democrats

Ben Florsheim, Public Figure
You are within your rights to make wild, baseless accusations and live your life in an alternative reality of paranoia and ignorance. You are not, however, entitled to use my image on your website in association with this behavior. Take it down immediately.
Sincerely,

Ben Florsheim
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Insider never labeled Florsheim's picture, however, he has chosen to identify himself in the post previously published here: http://www.middletowninsider.com/2012/09/whats-up-did-anybody-in-2011-vote-2x-in.html .
Florsheim is president of the Wesleyan College Democrats, a Middletown Democrat Town Committee elected member, and the vice president of the National College Democrats. He worked on the Gov. Malloy campaign and aided MDTC in providing buses and pizza to bring students to the polls. Florsheim helped to register over 400 students last election.
Florsheim made false accusations towards former Mayor Sebastian Giuliano,  and then P.Z. Candidate Molly Salafia, Registrar Janice Giofriddo in an SEEC (State Elections Enforcement Commission) complaint filed by a fellow College Democrat. All allegations were dismissed, and in fact the SEEC ruled all were actually PROMOTING voting in their actions in which the complaint was based on.
Several letters of protest from Florsheim and other  Wesleyan students seem to have aided in the retraction of the appointment of Giuliano to SEEC chair last year. The full ruling, which is also publicly available on the SEEC website can be read here:http://www.middletowninsider.com/2012/06/state-elections-commission-throws-out.html
Had they not been, each could have faced up to 5 years in prison with a minimum mandatory 1 year served for the felonies..... Florsheim circulated

Submitted as a Letter to the Editors of the Middletown Insider written by Molly Salafia, Middletown Resident
This week Middletown lost a stellar resident and many of us a true friend in the abrupt passing of Laura Cartwright.
Laura was a humanitarian to say the very least. She was a mother of two, a psychic medium, a certified deaf interpreter, a teacher who taught at Middlesex Community College, an EMS first responder, a professional figure skater, co-founder of PACC, the Paranormal Association of Central Connecticut, and a true lover of life and spirit.
I met Laura in 2010 at the Guided Lantern Tour that was held at Indian Hill Cemetery as a fundraiser for Godfrey Library and the cemetery association. I went to do an article for the Middletown Eye, but as a result became fascinated with her, her group, and the sense of community amongst the paranormal investigator lifestyle.

Last year, Laura and her daughter won awards at New England Paranormal Awards for their community out reach. Laura led multiple charitable investigations at historic places, such as the Deep River Library, to benefit the foundations caring for these properties as well as develop investigations for those in the deaf community so that for the first time, they could participate.
Laura inspired many to reach out to people unlike them and incorporate them in their worlds as equals.

Laura would have been too polite to say it, so I will. Laura and her family were victims of retaliation, mistreatment, and harassment caused by the last administration of the Middletown Public School system, particularly special education. She was grateful for the changes on the horizon, but I think if she were still here she would agree that much more is needed.

Suzio: Halt Early Release of Violent Criminals

A message from State Senator Len Suzio
Fapyo Ghazal, the son of murdered Meriden store owner Ibrahim Ghazal, speaks to the media last month as Sen. Len Suzio listens. Sen. Suzio and the Ghazal family are fighting to reform a new state law which enables violent felons to be released from prison early.

Those of us who are critics of the state's new early prison release program have been calling for it to be suspended for violent criminals and those guilty of sexual crimes, such as pedophilia.
We have asked for the program to be suspended pending an investigation of the program's practices and procedures.  We want to make certain that the public is not being needlessly exposed to convicted rapists, arsonists and animal abusers who have been released from Connecticut prisons long before they have served their time. The state's non-partisan, independent Office of the Victim Advocate shares our view.
The Frankie Resto case is an example of how the new early release system has failed to protect the public.  Resto, who had been released under the new program, has been charged with the cold-blooded murder of Meriden store owner Ibrahim Ghazal on June 27. Inmate Resto had been serving a 75-month sentence for armed robbery and was released from prison this April, almost 200 days earlier than scheduled. Moreover, prison officials were forced to release inmate Resto before a "sponsor" could be confirmed for him.  Why did that happen? Because the new early release credits shortened Resto's sentence so much that he qualified for "time served" before a sponsor could be arranged. Prison officials had no choice but to let him loose with little to no monitoring of his activities or whereabouts.

Winsley: Suspend the Gas Tax Now!

Wayne Winsley for Congress
Connecticut’s Third Congressional District

MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release
Suspend Gas Taxes Now
NAUGATUCK, CONN – September 12: Wayne Winsley, committed to effectively represent all the people of Connecticut’s 3rd U.S. Congressional District and to restore the Public Trust, today released the following statement:
“Whether a person has a full-time job that they must commute to; or, a person is out of work but actively seeking a job; or, commuting to a part-time job; or, commuting to school; or, going to the grocery store to purchase food for their family – we need gasoline in the tank.  That’s the reality.
Here’s another part of our reality: Putting gas in the tank costs money’.  In Connecticut, gasoline costs are way too high.
Why is every one of us paying excessively high ‘Gas Prices at the Pump here in Connecticut?  Here are some facts:
  • The fact is every gallon of gas costs much more today than it did when President Obama took office.
  • The fact that Mr. Obama blocks expanded drilling is another.
  • The dollar’s devaluation internationally is another.
  • The dollar’s decreasing purchasing power domestically is yet another.
Each of these facts-among others-are part of the ‘per gallon cost’ problem each of us faces every time ‘at the pump’.
“But, an overriding factor is the ineffective representation by incumbents among the CT Delegation to Washington  - as well as State Legislative majority in Hartford, who persistently have put their own ‘tax collecting interests’ and ongoing ‘politics-as-usual’ ahead of all of the people’s interests.  Such practices cannot be permitted to continue.”
“It’s Time to Change.  It’s Time to Lead.  It’s Time to Act.  It’s Time to Suspend Gas Taxes!”
Today, I call on every incumbent/challenger for the US Congress to join me in Suspending the Federal Gas Tax.                 I am calling for a full suspension of the $18.4 cents per gallon Federal Gas Tax effective October 1, 2012.                              We do not need to wait for January.  In fact, we must not wait. We must take action now ‘for the people’.
Further, in the spirit of Restoring America’s Promise, I cordially invite every current Federal Incumbent/Challenger to join me; and, I am extending my hand to each current CT Federal Incumbent (Blumenthal, Lieberman, Courtney, DeLauro, Himes, Larson and Murphy) as well as each CT Federal Challenger (Decker, Estey, Formica, McMahon, Obsitnick, Rorabach, among others).
In addition, I call on every incumbent/challenger for the State Legislature to join me in Suspending the CT State Gas Tax.
